I'm leaning toward the IB as well. I have not fed anything since Monday night and then I was feeding boiled chicken breast and small bits of white rice. I had also given her a "taste" of organic yogurt every other day since Friday. The vet wants me to feed the prescription diet in very small quantities until Friday and then introduce her to her regular food gradually. He wants her back on her normal diet (lowfat and no table scraps) as soon as she can tolerate it in order to avoid the constipation. He said "NO BOILED CHICKEN!" It did not work for her so let's not go back down that route. Will the canned pumpkin irritate the pancreas? When would you introduce into the diet? I agreed to the enema only because the vet took me back and showed me the X-rays and I could see her entire colon was backed up with stool. I was also afraid that I would get her home and it would be explosive bloody stool (based on the fact that they were throwing out the HGE dx earlier in the day) and she would go into shock before I could get her to the vet. I have cared for many patients who ended up needing enemas...they aren't as traumatic as they may seem. Although I know in Abbie's case it must have been EXTREMELY stressful and I don't think that the pumpkin would have done the job. In fact I think she was so backed up that is why she vomitted on Monday after being emesis free since the prior Thursday. I'm just a worried Mommy who is trying to make the best decisions for my pup that I can. At this point I'm tired of her being poked and shuffled around. I'm going to follow the ER vets instructions as he seemed adamant that this was going to work...he even wants me to call his office tomorrow to give him the update. My pup is tired and our entire family has been disrupted by this illness...whatever it is. |
per ims we see she said chicken can worsen a dog with ibd as dogs with ibd tend to have food allergies and boiled chicken is not good for that. I would stick to ultra z/d for now even though it has chicken in it - it is hydrolized. no pumpkin and NO YOGURT dogs are lactose intolerant many times so yogurt can make the diarrhea worse. Stick to vets suggestion with feeding I agree she has been through a nightmare :( It is so hard as they cannot talk and when they keep throwing all this stuff out at you - your head spins so why i tend to go back read up on it and go yeah or neh on stuff as i think sometimes they are just guessing too sadly :( If ibd the steroid will help decrease inflamation but always a risk of affecting pancreas with that drug so keep an eye on her and get some rest i am sure you both are exhausted |
what were you feeding prior to the vomitting and diarhea ? Also did they send out a fecal to lab - cannot remember if this was done as well? if not i would take next stool sample and have them send to lab - you do not need to take her in for that just drop off for them |
I live in NC, too, and would highly recommend the NC State Vet School. You will need to get a referral from your vet. North Carolina State University :: Welcome to North Carolina State University Just to correct something Dwerten said, Abbie would not be treated by students. Board certified specialists see each patient. It is a teaching hospital so students observe and participate. It's no different than going to a teaching hospital like UNC in Chapel Hill yourself. VHS in Raleigh is also excellent, but will be much more expensive. Veterinary Speciality Hospital of the Carolinas |
Thanks for the info! What an amazing knowledge base you ladies have! Fecal was performed and was negative. Ladymom, can you give me an idea of how much it costs at NC State? Is it handled like a normal vet visit where you pay a consultation fee then pay for additional treatments? Thanks! |
This is directly from their website: With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the VTH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 22,000 patients are treated in the VTH. This is the direct link to the vet school with lots of information. Veterinary Teaching Hospital :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine Lady sees the ophthalmologists there. We pay $65 for the consult/exam and any tests, lab work, etc. is an additional charge. |

Some of these interns are pretty sharp though as usually when i call in at night for er i talk with them and they know there stuff but if I want to specify bc internal medicine i have to take mine during the day and specifically set an appt with them or i get an intern with a critical care person over seeing their case I found this out just recently when dex was vomitting last week and i wanted ims but ours was off until that friday and i had to take him to ims there by appt or go through emergency and take my chances or go to my vet who was on vacation or back up vet i have Thank goodness we do not have to deal with referrals here though as I do not like that - i think a person who pays should have the choice of who to go to whenever they want. |
If she keeps messing with her bandage and you don't want to use an E-collar, try putting bitter apple on it. |
