Should a breeder give you the money back if a pups has giardia or coccida?

Coccidia is a parasite that at times does not manifest itself until the pup is put into a stressful situation, as being removed from it's mother and being placed in a new home.

If you're asking if the breeder should give you back what you payed for the puppy, not a life threatening infection, unless left untreated. So my answer is no on that one.

However, if both conditions are present, and manifest themselves withing a couple of days in the new owner's home a breeder should at least cover the meds to treat both problems....

A full refund on your puppy for Coccidia or Giardia? No, I wouldn't think so, but then it would be nice if they offered to pay for the treatment. Now, if the condition was allowed to go untreated for a period of time where there could be permanent damage to the dog, then a refund possibly. More likely though, you would get another puppy from the same breeder instead of a refund.

If the condition is left untreated by the new owner I don't think it would be the breeder's responsibility to replace or refund the money. This is where a relationship with the breeder comes in to play. The relationship with the breeder shouldn't end when you walk out the door with your puppy. Your breeder should go over the possibility of certain things that can happen after the pup has left their home. A contract should be in place stipulating that the pup be examined by a vet within a certain amount of time. Also, frequent phone calls between the new family and breeder during the first week or so after the transition.

I'm saying if you get a dog from a breeder that has had coccidia for an extended period of time while still with the breeder, that breeder should not expect the new owner to pay for treatment.

Now, if you get a puppy, don't get them vet checked with a couple of days of bringing them home and wait for weeks or more, then it's the new owner's responsibility, IMO.

You're right about the relationship with your breeder. I love your line about buying your breeder first!

Ah! Thanks for the clarification. But, it's beyond my comprehension why any breeder would knowingly place a puppy that is sick. But, I would think that if a pup maifests coccidia and/or giardia within the first week, it very well contracted it from the breeder's home.

I've been thinking.....Some contracts say 24 others say 48 hours to have the pup checked. However, there is a federal law (and I've got to look it up) that if one is disatisfied with a purchase they have 72 hours to return merchandise. Now pups are not merchandise, but I would think it would apply to anything one would buy.

I will be interested in what you find out because I thought it was based state to state on puppy lemon laws.

I think you're right, it would be under a puppy lemon law, because I thought there really aren't "buyer's remorse" laws, except to include door-to-door sales, and limited other things. IDK, maybe a puppy would be one of those items?

Not all states have puppy lemon laws. But, lemon laws are predicated on puppy illnesses.

What I was speaking too, the federal law such as terminating a contract within 72 hours of purchase. It doesn't mean the car has a problem with it. Just the customer has the option of returning it without being liable for payments. I would think it would apply to anything that is purchased. Just wondering if this would null and void contracts that state you have 24 or 48 hours for vet checks. And contracts stating that you can return the pup but, the deposit is not refundable.

Gone a bit off topic....but, just thinking.

No that is not true in all states either....and I know for some states it is like only for door to door sales etc, just like Jen said.

I think there are only 4 states that have puppy lemon laws or at least 4/5 years ago that was it but hopefully more have added some of this to their state laws.
