Anemic yorkie - low red cell count Hi Everyone. I brought Sparky (6 months old) to the vet to have him neutered and had the bloodwork done as a precausion. Well, they did not do the surgery because the vet said he was a little underweight and anemic (red blood cell count too low). I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. He weighed 1.7 lbs when I got him at 12 weeks old and at 6 months he now weighs 2.1 lbs. They sent me home with a wormer, some vitamins (Pet-Tinic) and some Purina Pro-Plan Puppy food (canned) to mix with his kibble (Blue Buffalo Puppy) which he loved for a few days but then kind of lost interest. I started mashing in some cooked chicken breast into the mix and he really loves it now!! Is it ok to give him the chicken breast long-term or will he get too much protein??? |
As for the chicken breast, use the smallest amount possible that will still entice him to eat. You can also add some water to the mix. Long term- it's better if he eats foods that may not be an optimum diet than if he doesn't eat the optimum at all. |
Thanks for the input, and I agree about the chicken breast. Should I try to wean him off of it as soon as possible. |
here is some info on blood work Structure and Function of the Blood in Dogs what is coming to mind is red meat helps with anemia but check with vet about using low fat ground beef |
has your dog had something with alot of garlic in it ? I am sure no onion correct? as those two things can trigger this in dogs and some things have garlic in it to ward off fleas Onions and garlic can cause anemia in dogs |
auto immune diseases run alot in this breed like hypothyroid, allergies, etc due to inbreeding of this breed so much so here is something i found for you to read and check out Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia in Dogs (IMHA) |
Hi, thank you so much for responding and I will do the reading on the links you suggested. Stopped by the vet today just to weigh him and had gained 3 ounces in 2 weeks. Before that he had been only gaining about an ounce a month. No he has had nothing with garlic or onion. Strictly his food except for raw carrots and baked sweet potatoe. |
