Baby Teeth Ok, so I'm new to yorkie motherhood. I have done quite a bit of reading about yorkies. Since my girls are 13 months (Goldie), and 10 months old (Gracie), I'm trying to get informed on everything they need to have done. I've only had them a few weeks and we made our first trip to the vet last week. Gracie had been vomiting a little that morning, but I figured she probably just had an upset stomach. I get them both checked by the vet to find out that they have never lost their baby teeth. Apparently this is common in yorkies from what the vet says. But having the baby teeth along with the adult teeth had caused bacteria to get trapped and gave them a gum infection and then tonsillitus. So we did 7 days antibiotics and then they had their baby teeth removed yesterday and their teeth cleaned. They have both been shaking quite a bit today, so I called the vet to see if this is normal. She said it is most likely because they are having some pain and we should put them on some anti-inflammatory meds for that. (I have no clue why they didn't do that anyway.) My girls have been together since Gracie was born. They sleep together, eat out of the same bowl and play nicely together. But since I brought them home from the vet, Goldie has been snapping at Gracie. It's not the normal playing, she really gets riled at times. We actually have had to seperate them for a while to get her to calm down. Gracie hasn't really wanted to play or anything, so this behavior is unprovoked. Can anyone offer some advice or reasoning behind this? I don't know if it might be because she's in pain or just nerves from the vet experience. She seems fine with us, just not her sister. |
I hope you are not giving them dry kibble. They need to have a soft diet for the first day or so. I have had two of my six that have had extractions, they are a little less playful after, but by the next day they are fine. |
Actually I have. The vet said no food at all the first day and then regular diet the next. I asked shouldn't I put them on soft food for a few days and was told it was better to put them back on their regular diet. (Royal Canin for Yorkshires). I'm upset this morning and am taking Gracie back to the clinic as soon as they open. They gave them a (nsaid) medicine called metacam yesterday to give by mouth, once a day. Gracie has stopped the shaking but she's acting like she feels really bad. She's laying on my lap sleeping and she feels very warm to me. It could be just the medicine, but I'm not taking any chances. They had this done on Thursday. I thought they would be over it by today. |
I don't have any answers for you but I am sending positive thoughts and well wishes for a speedy recovery. I think you are doing the right thing by taking her back today. I would think if her surgery was on Thursday she would be feeling better by today too. I am glad you posted this because my 4 month old Mylee is showing signs of retaining her baby teeth so we may be going through the very same thing. Will be watching for an update. |
Sometimes they do act a bit out of kilter and shake for the first day; but always if you are concerned, take to the vet. At least then you know for sure! I hope she is feeling better quickly! :) |
Thanks very much for the replies. I just came back from the vet with Gracie and she is running a temperature. The vet said her gums seem to be healing fine but changed her antibiotics. She said it is probably just from having the surgery. We also decided to just put some water in the Royal Canine to make it softer for them for a few days. |
