URGENT: my 6 month old puppy ingested Clipper Oil Hi, I am very freaked out right now! I noticed Bailey sitting in his bed chewing on something, and when I got to him it was a small bottle that came in a package with his Wahl hair clipper. It is called Wahl Clipper Oil. On the lable it says to keep it away from children because it it poisonous. He was chewing the bottle and punctured it with his teeth. When I took it away the bottle was all oily and his mouth was also oily. I am not sure how much of it was in the bottle to start with, but I'd say at least a quarter of it is missing. (It's a very small bottle, maybe 3-4 table spoons in there) I rushed him to the sink and washed out his mouth as much as I could, and also gave him some toast and forced him to drink water. (not sure whether that was a good idea or not, I was in panic and trying to do what I can) I phoned his vet immediately but he said to wait and see whether he vomits and than to call him back. (he said it should happen within the next half hour or so). It's been about 30 minutes but he seems ok so far, nothing unusual. Should I be doing anything else??? I am just very freaked out and have no idea what to do!!!! I know he definitely got some of the Clipper Oil in his mouth, what if he goes without showing any symptoms, is there any long term damage? He is a 6 month puppy, in a good health. Also, what is the maximum time that he would get symptoms if he got poisoned? At what point will I know he will be ok? I'm extremely worried about him! He's a very sweet puppy, I can't imagine something bad happening to him!! Anything else I can do at this point??? |
Call Poison Control Center and get their recommendations. http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison...-poisoned.html |
Anko, Don't worry - It will be ok. Just wait and see if he starts vomiting. I have two puppies Maya and Lily and at one point the had earmites, and the vet gave me two lubricant creams to put in their ears and they actually got into one and punctured the whole tube million times and they ate the whole thing. Lily had diareah one time and then they both seemed fine. I also had another dog that pass away, but that one ate a whole pack Hydroxicut type of pills and I swear I don't know how that dog survived but she was not sick at all - she was hyper like crazy for a day. Just wait and see if he starts acting funny, is unresponsive, vomites, diareah. If you notice anything at all take him to the vet. I hope it will be ok. |
I wouldn't wait and see, you may need to make him vomit, depending on the toxin. Some things are okay to let go thru their system, others are not and you want it out, bc it may cause liver/kidney damage and that could be temporary or permanent. Poison Control should give you the correct infomation as to the exact type of poison and what should be done. |

Thanks for your replies!!! Bailey is still feeling alright, he is sleeping in his bed right now. I find it somewhat hard to determine whether it is a sign of him being lethargic or whether he is just taking his usual nap (he's been very active all day and has not napped yet). How can you tell the difference? The label on the bottle containing the Wahl clipper oil, is pretty useless and doesn't say what ingredients are in it, all it says is that it is dangerous. DAH! I looked up Wahl clipper oil, which is sold separately in large bottles, and according to that the dangerous ingredient is petroleum distillates. If this is the same product that Bailey was exposed to, from what I am reading everywhere that vomiting should not be induced. I will keep updating, as I know more... |
UPDATE: Thankfully Bailey is feeling great, no symptoms at all! Didn't even get diarrhea, or anything. I will be going through the house and making sure that there is nothing else around that he can get in to in the future. |
I am so glad he appears to be fine. Most clipper oils are very light lubricating mineral oils and because they are used in conjunction with animals (animal clippers) they are relatively harmless, because those oils when they come in contact with the skin while being used, are absorbed that way too not just through ingestion. Of course, the warning is because it is not meant to be ingested. The black grease that comes with clippers would be more of a concern than the oil, but obviously every animal can react differently, and Yorkies can be very sensitive, so you absolutely did the right thing being concerned and checking. |
Also would be better to wash his muzzle with plain Dawn dishwashing liquid. Best thing to use to cut the oil and rinses off completely. Used on wildlife during oilspills because it's so effective. |
