Liver Shunt Success Stories Has anyone on here had the LS surgery on their yorkie and to this day is a success? I have read a few stories about having the surgery and then another shunt comes or they end up having MVD. I want Sasha to be completely cured and to have a normal dog life. I am a member of Liver Shunt_and_MVD_groups on yahoo but whenever I bring it up, they tell me, "every story is different" or "you can't expect your dog to come out of the LS like other dogs" and it's frustrating. I feel they are annoyed when I ask questions. Anyone have a success story?:( |
Do you have a diagnosis yet? |
She had BAT and the pre was 78.6 and post 269.8. I'm planning on getting a scintigraphy done at the end of February. |
I hope all goes well for little Sasha. I just looked at her pics...she is a cutie. :) |
I'd like to hear some success stories too. There probably are some on here. Lucy's BAT numbers were lower than your's - 51 and 41 so we are waiting 30 days and retesting. I'm on that Yahoo group too but I haven't asked any questions yet. I get so many emails that it's hard to keep up with them. Keep us posted on Sasha and maybe someone will come along with positive news! |
You can go here Liver Shunt Stories and read several stories. :) |

Here is my friend's dog Tyler he has 25% use of kidney and he had liver shunt surgery and doing great - she will talk to you if you want pm me Liver Shunt Stories on the yahoogroup I sent you link for there are more people on there as well that have had great success and this link above is many of them but there are more on that group |
ronlynn's teddi is on that link too as a success story |
Please let me know if you have any questions....Teddi had her surgery 2 years ago and we have never had one problem since her surgery! She is 100% cured and has never been better. I would highly recommend going to UT (but I would definitely get the scintigraphy test done before you go) because that will tell you if your pup is operable or not. I have heard stories where people go to UT to get it all done there and found out after they got there that their dog is not operable and that seems like a waste to me. You can read about Teddi's story on the link above. |
Liver Shunt Stories I dont think the people on the yahoo group are tired of you asking questions, they are wanting you to realize that each case is different, and for each surgery there may be a different outcome. I know it is confronting for us to read sucess stories about others when faced with the possibility of losing our babies. I felt the same way before Gizmo's surgery. I remember reading Ronlynn's story about Teddi. I so wanted Gizmo to have a happy ending too, but he did not recover and I lost him. At the same time of Gizmo's surgery there were others who were younger than him who were released with great prognosis. Each case is different depending on the condition of the animal before surgery, and the condition of the liver and other organs. Find out all of Sasha's test results and what they mean for her. This will give you a more informed knowledge of her over all well being, and help you to understand what her chances are for a normal life after LS surgery. Both you and Sasha will be in my prayers. |
Successful Liver shunt surgery My best friend Kim and I got Yorkie cousins, Lexi and Carlie together from the same breeder. The pups were 6 months old when we got them; they were perfect or so we thought. At 8 months Lexi was diagnosed after many tests with Liver Shunt. Lexi had surgery at Iowa State Vet Med school. Lexi is now 18 months old and she is doing great! Surgery was successful, she is on a restricted diet but doing fine. Kim is not a member of YT (she doesnt have a lot of time for the computer) pm and I will put you in touch with Kim and Lexi. Good luck. :aimeeyork |
I don't have much time to post now, but I can tell you my Lola had LS surgery to repair her shunt at UT last March. She also had the scintigraphy, was spayed and had her baby teeth pulled at the same time. The problem having the scintigraphy done elsewhere is that you do have to put them to sleep and if they indeed do have a shunt, you may run into problems if that facility is not prepared and accustomed to LS babies. It was comforting to go to a place (UT) that does these over and over each day with such tiny babies. Lola is doing wonderful, she also had MVD, but is like a different dog now that we repaired her shunt. UT definitely saved Lola's life! |
