Whitish gums I noticed Callie wasn't acting like she felt real well and I checked her gums and they where whitish, I went to press on them and check the capillary refill time but they didnt really change this has happened before a few times and I have given her something with a little fast acting sugar in it. Well I have diabetes and so I know general foods to use if my sugar is low and having seen apple slices on a list that is an ok snack for dogs I grabbed apple sauce and gave her a little and she seems to be acting a little better. I'm really not sure what this means she is almost 3 years old and I thought only little tiny puppies had low blood sugar and Callie is 16 pounds. Can anyone help me out here and give me any ideas about what could have caused this? Thanks is advance. |
I think it would be best to have your vet have a look at her. |
This could be a serious emergency if your dog's gums are pale or "whitish"! Recently my son's beagle developed these kind of symptoms along with lethargy. She was near death by the time we got her to the Vet...they can go down that fast! Sammy was diagnosed with IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) and it is a very grave illness! I don't want to scare you but...PLEASE get your baby into the Vet's immediately even if you have to go tonight! |
Agree... go to vet. |
ADMIN...can this thread get moved to the Sick & Injured/Emergency section asap? Pretty please? Thanks! |
Could she have been bit/stung by anything, or maybe gotten into something. I would take her into the vet. You are right that it is not normal for a 3 year old to get low blood sugar. The gums are an indication that something else is definitely wrong. |
Her gums are pinkish again and she walking around checking things out and chewing on her bone. Sense she is acting ok right now I'm going to try and wait until when our vet opens up at 9am I really was not happy with the ER vet when we went for Callies shoulder. |
Is she still acting funny? If yes, to really see if this is sugar related, I'd give something more concentrated like Karo syrup - rub on gums. If that doesn't perk her up...then it wouldn't seem as related to sugar. If she is really acting out of character, then I think I'd call an ER vet and describe? When you say she was acting like she didn't feel well....do you mean she was wobbly, or weak, or walking funny...or...? What's happening w/ appetite? |
