Oh no! I'm so sorry. Thank goodness you kept taking him in until they found what's causing this. I will keep both of you in my prayers, and I'll check here for updates on the biopsy tomorrow. Give the little guy hugs from us! |
It's always hard to learn that there is something wrong, but at least now the mending can begin. It sounds as though there is a good chance that they will be able to help Ted and that he will be okay. We'll definitely keep the prayers and good thoughts going for you and Ted. Hugs to you. And keep in mind, while you are wide awake at night, a lot of us are here on YT! Hugs to you and Ted. |
Thanks guys. Have you ever had the belt on your vacuum cleaner break in the middle of vacuuming? That's the noise he makes 24/7 followed by the sound of an oxygen tank after the long whiney noise. |
Awwww, poor guy. I will hold Ted and you in my thoughts and prayers. |
That's really tough to hear. I was hoping it was something they could suction out. At least you know a little more. We'll be saying some special prayers for you and Ted that it will be over soon and he'll be on the road to recovery. I think it's wonderful that you love him the way you do. Otherwise, you would not have known what was really wrong. You're a good mommy and kept after it until you found out what was going on with him. |

Hi just sending hug's and prayers to you and ted.. |
Oh Corrinne, I'm so sorry. I'm glad that you finally have an answer and can now take steps to get Ted back on his feet and breathing freely! My thoughts and prayers are with you both!!! (((((((HUGS))))))) |
Thanx, everyone. Surgeon just called with biopsy results. He said he's 99 percent sure it's A FRIGGIN PIECE OF CARROT. He said, "It's a very rare case." So the $7,000 carrot caper will come to an end Monday with surgery. He said he will go through the mouth, cut the soft palate and retrieve it that way as now it is surrounded by soft tissue. If that doesn't work, he will have to go in through the top of the nose. I always dreamed one day i'd get a big old expensive karat...just never imagined it would be orange and stuck up my poor dog's nose. Ted is okay. Still miserably breathing but eating and hanging in there until Monday. I thank each of you for helping us get through this. An entire month of mentioning the choking of the carrot and no one would listen whilst poor Ted endured unnecessary medication, poking, prodding, and two sedations. I will be back when I hear from surgeon on Monday that he is safe and sound. They are taking him in Sunday evening to spend the night for early surgery. Thanx so much. Wee Ted will be happily sniffing again. So much for healthy treats. luv corrinne |
Again, we can NEVER under estimate the power of our own intuition. Not to say that intuition makes for expertise but it sure has some teeth to it. I am so sorry it has taken all of this to find out but at least you have found out and something can actually be done to help poor Ted. Our thoughts and prayers remain with you both! Huggs |
Best wishes to you and Ted!! |
Wow, who knew a carrot could cause all these problems? I know you're upset that the doctors didn't listen to you, but it's great that the biopsy came back clean. What happened with the carrot exactly? I feed them to my guys occasionally and now you have me concerned. |
A mama knows; right. I mean there was no sneezing, no nasal drip...nothing that resembled allergies. I guess they had to start somewhere. The noise progressed over time and even then they simply prescribed heavier amount of steriod and added anti-biotics. I wish you all could hear this sound. It does not sound like any kind of allergy i ever heard. I will be writing the vets a letter so next time they will take a choking incident previous to such a condition seriously on the off chance something did get inhaled in the process. |
No doc here or anything but I wonder if the reverse sneeze thing could have aided in this mishap (kind of a poor name for all that you have been thru dear Ted but didn't know what else to call it). |
I had given Ted a piece of a baby raw carrot as I always do. He chewed it into tiny pieces as he does, and those were on the floor when I heard him choke, I picked him up, stuck my finger in his mouth and swooped out a piece of carrot, and the episode was over. I'm assuming that when he choked he inhaled some of the other little pieces that he had chewed up in his mouth and it must have lodged back there and then the tissue has wrapped around it and inflammed. I will be paranoid to give him anything. I believe it could have happened whether it was a carrot or a doggie milkbone. You know how they much it up into little pieces. He just happened to choke this time. I never ever thought that when they choke there could still be something that went in. But come to think of it i have many a times had drink or food go down wrong whole and it starts coming out your nose. know what I'm trying to say? It just got stuck and didn't travel down throat or up nasal completely. |
Corrine, I am so sorry you and Ted have been threw so much. Your intuition was right on. I am happy to read Ted will get that much needed surgery on Mon and finally be able to breathe the way he's suppose to. Poor baby having such difficulty breathing. I know it must have ripped your heart apart listening to his gasping. I hope the weekend goes by fast for the two of you so all this can just be over and you can get back to a normal, happy life with your boy. Will watch for an update on Mon, Hugs and best wishes for Ted on Monday, |
Now that's terrifying. You're right - it could've been anything. I will be keeping a much closer eye on mine from now on. Although, I don't know what more you could've done or how you could've known. |
The surgeon said it was "rare"; so don't worry yourself sick. Just if your baby does choke and weird breathing starts few days later, it is a possibility something is lodged up high in the nose area. thanks, you guys. It has been a roller coaster. They assure me though Ted sounds so horrible (he will breathe through tiny air space in nose and refuse to open mouth till he absolutely has to then gasp) that he can breathe and not life threatening. Do me a favor and watch your babies breathe today. Do they ever sit and breathe through their mouth? Ted refuses to. Insists on struggling through the nose unless he is in car panting and then there is no awful noise cause he's using mouth. It's been so long since he's breathed normal I don't even know if he ever did breathe through mouth or only nose. |
I am so sorry for you and Ted you are in my prayers and I am so glad that you did not give up on finding the right vet!! Ted is fortunate to have you for his mommy!;) I pray everything goes smoothly. |
Yes, I would definitely inform those other vets about how ridiculous they made you feel in denying any possibility that the carrot may've had anything to do with Ted's breathing difficulties. How dare they insult a concerned pet owner like that! Please let us know when Ted's out of surgery, and may God be with him.:animal36:animal-pa |
I don't know how I missed this before. What a story! Thank goodness it was finally diagnosed. Prayers for you and little Ted. Hope that carrot is out soon and he is breathing normally again. |
Wow, I'm so sorry about Ted. That's awful that none of the vets took you seriously. I'm glad they finally listened to you and that in a few short days (although they'll probably feel like forever) he'll be as good as new:) |
So glad that they finally figured out what it is that is giving poor Ted such a rough time. Just would have been sooner had they listened to you! But at least now things can move along and Ted will be back to his normal self. :) Still sending good thoughts and prayers your way! Will definitely check on Monday for an update. Try not to worry yourself...dumb to say, I know. Hugs, Bo |
Hugs and prayers to you both... Just thinking... he may be trying to breathe through his nose to try to dislodge the carrot, and by now it may have become habit?... |
The diagnosis they gave me after catscan and rhinoscope is : Caudal nasal/choanal mass - suspect either polyp or inflammation secondary to foreign body. Soft tissue mass 2cm X 2cm at choanae (back of nose above hard palate) mild bony destruction thought to be caused by pessure of the mass. So the surgeon believes the carrot has become surrounded in the soft tissue which has formed around it. The biopsy came back not cancerous. He said it was very rare and most likely he inhaled piece of carrot when he choked over a month ago. Rare that it would sit long enough to encase in tissue but he has seen it happen with bee-bees (gun). My friends want me to ask for the carrot piece and set it in gold. He'll go in tomorrow evening, surgery Monday. He's still here making the noise; though it does sound a little better since they cut off a piece for the biopsy. |
My thoughts and prayers are offered for a successful ending to Ted's escapade. Once this is removed he'll be breathing easier I'm sure. Wow, what an ordeal for all involved, especially Ted. |
Thanx, Wemple. It's the weirdest thing ever. I took him to vet on Dec 21st (few days after choking on carrot) thinking, "I better get this taken care of before Xmas and wind up in emergency). Six vet visits later, here we are. Initially vets convinced me there was no chance it was related to the choking incident, but his breathing just kept getting worse, even with medication. So lesson learned. The surgeon and his team (oh, yes, Ted now has 4 physicians attending to him) are surprised that a piece of food would stay lodged so long in that area. so it is quite rare, but just my luck, we're the "rare" ones. All I can say is if your pet ever chokes and weird breathing starts in the followin days make sure they "listen" to that fact. It will save your pet a lot of unnecessary meds and prodding and save you a lot of money to go straight to a specialist. thanx for your prayers. luv corrinne |
You are welcome. I have learned so much from YT, needless to say I wish you and Ted never had to go through this horrifying experience, but maybe, just maybe this will be the answer to someone out there with a similar problem. I know I am now aware of the possibility of this happening. Best wishes once again, hope Ted is back to his old self real soon, I'll be praying for him and thinking about you... |
Ted's surgeon said he did well in surgery. He did have to cut soft and hard palate to reach the mass and still could not get it all out; so then had to scrape (I think he called it burr the bone?) and feels he got it all out. He said it was as big as his fingertip. No visible carrot but he had not cut into the mass yet when I spoke to him. He will do another biopsy to make sure it is not diseased. He said even if they don't find carrot, it could have been lodged for a time to cause inflammation which created a polyp type thingy. Ted is in hospital about an hour away; so I went over there from work but they would not allow me to see him tonight. Naturally I was petrified something is wrong but they assure me he's ok and was still out of it and just didn't want him to move or anything. If all goes well, he may come home Wednesday. Thank you everyone. Not out of the woods yet..but almost. I sure do miss my wee man. luv corrinne xoxox |
