hypoglycemic one year old?
 

Just want some opinions, advice... My little catherine (4 pounds) started throwing up yesterday evening, once I was shocked but not overly concerned, then she started shaking and throwing up about every 10 minutes. Temp was normal. I immediately got out the nutrical and rubbed some on her gums - she did not want to eat or drink anything. I gave her about 4 injections of warm lactated ringers totaling about 6 cc's. Within 20 minutes the shaking stopped and she didn't throw up again. Within an hour she seemed fine. No more issues since. I am taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I want some opinions. Was this hypoglycemia? She is a year old. She never has been sick ever (except a little fever after having her retained teeth pulled which we treated with baytril).

Nothing has changed except it's super cold.

Oh yeah, hubby is thinking hyperglycemia.. We have a toddler who apparently dropped some cake on the floor yesterday evening and catherine got to it before we could (we always pick up any dropped food so the dogs can't eat it).

I don't know the answer, but hope she gets better!!!! Sounds like you did a good job with her though!!!!!!!!!!!

I will certainly keep everyone posted. I'll probably just ask the vet to run a blood panel tomorrow.

I really don't know if it was hypoglycemia or not, maybe she just got an upset tummy from the cake. But Winston is 5 years old and still has low blood sugar episodes...and he ain't tiny...pushing 9 pounds now. But he has had this since he was 2, never as a pup...so, go figure. Hope this was simply an isolated incident for Catherine...and you never have to worry about it again. It is a constant worry for me, I was instructed to feed several meals daily, hence the weight problem...yet, at times they still occur. Have never understood it, but I've witnessed it with my own two eyes. I check his glucose levels, sometimes they are dangerously low in the 20's...then he has seizures. Anyway, best wishes to you and your little gal...hope and pray she is okay.

Oh wow. Okay, thanks! I just thought that blood sugar issues over about 5 months meant a bigger issue... But, it is then possible this was just an isolated incident.

And, I guess it could have been just stomach upset and the shaking from the puking - I know when I get sick my muscles hurt from the hurling. :)

I did not think vomiting was a sign of hypoglycemia, but a result of vomiting. ?? I would definitely take her to a vet and have lab studies done. She could have pancreatitis.

Thanks! Yeah, I am really confused about the whole situation. Though I am glad she is asymptomatic at this point, we are most certainly going to investigate.

has your pup been bile acid tested as hypoglycemia and liver shunt go hand in hand so definitely get a blood panel and to test pancreas get cpli and to test liver get pre and post bile acids - have you ever had blood work prior?

She has never had any prior blood work done, so unfortunately I don't have any healthy reference ranges for her. She just turned 1 and I had planned to have OFA patella and CERF examinations done. I guess I may as well fill out the forms for the bile acid test database submissions, too if I am going to have her tested.

here is what i would do if she was mine - i would fast her for 12 hrs take her in and do pre bile with the cbc panel and cpli then take food to vets or if you live close take her home feed her then 2 hrs on the dot she has to have blood drawn for post bile acids so if you think she will eat at vets office do it there then hang out in car and read for 2 hrs then get her back right on time for that post - this way only two blood draws and yorkies should have bile acids done anyway

I would do this because she needs a check anyway and also i would take in a urine sample from back of wee wee pad and fecal as i do blood work, fecal and urine once a year on all three of mine

I would do it this way because if you have blood panel done and they want to test liver you will have to have 3 blood draws instead of two which will be more stressful on your dog. They check the urine for crystals associated with liver issue so you want urine checked as well

My dog has mvd and i was furious as vet just did post bile and blood panel and so i had to take my dog back in for pre and post after and had i known i would have done the pre and post along with cbc from the get go - it would have been cheaper and less stressful on dee dee

I guess there is no database for bile acid tests, it's just a recommended test...

Doesn't the VMDB keep track of tests done at university labs? Anyone know if there is a database like OFA for bile acid test results?

Many vets including ours believe all yorkies should be bile acid tested as well as maltese as yorkies are 35% more likely to have shunts. It is a good thing to rule out as it is important to know for meds and anesthesia as well
