Advise please...dog ate chocolate cake! Buddy snuck up on the counter while we were doing other things and ate some chocolate cake. It was about four ounces with mini chocolate chips in it. I called the Vet, and they said to watch if he gets lethargic. All I know is, chocolate is bad news for dogs (right?), and a six pound Yorkie will have a very sensitive stomach. He threw up, but seems to be acting normally. We don't have much money after Christmas, but if he needs to go to the doctor, we will find the money. They said, if we need to, we could give him a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to help him purge. What can you tell me about dogs eating chocolate? |
I would do what the vet recommended and just keep a close eye on him. Hopefully he threw it up just in time before it could of absorbed into his body. I do know that chocolate can take quite a while before showing any signs of poisoning. |
I just had this happen the other night only it was choc covered peanut butter balls  I came right here for advice and was told called the vet and take him in, which I did and he was back to normal the next day after being there overnight! |
I sure hope Buddy is all right. :( |

I called the vet right after we realized what happened (maybe five minutes after he ate the cake). I am hoping that when he got sick, his body was naturally getting rid of it. I don't want to make him purge any more than he already did. It has been about three and a half hours since he ate it. |
So, he ate 4oz of the cake? How much chocolate was in the cake? Was it milk chocolate or semi-sweet or ? Do you think he vomited up approx. the full 4 oz? How long ago did he eat it? Do you keep activated charcoal capsules at home (like the kind vegetarians use for like, um, gas )? It is your call, of course, but chocolate can kill a dog. I think it's good that he threw up...but also it's a sign that his body IS reacting badly to the toxicity of the chocolate, and there could still be more in his body as the chocolate stays in a dog's body for a day or more. Did you check his heart rate? What did the vet say about his heart rate? I hope so too but thats what the hydrogen peroxide was for to make him puke it all up. choclate is very toxic. and its best to give right after they eat the choclate no later then 1-2 hrs Ive heard. |

When my Belle got into an Aloe Vera plant, she threw up herself immediately. I called our vet and they told me to still give ther the hydrogen peroxide to make sure she threw everthing up. I did and she threw up twice more and was fine. Unless you think he threw up everything he ate, I might give him a dose of it. If your staying home with him, you are going to want to make sure he stays warm and hydrated as well as keeping his sugar up. Wrap him in a banket, give him some nutri-cal, and keep an eye on him for a couple of hours (at least). |
The cake was more of a "loaf". It was a late Christmas gift to my wife from one of her customers, so I do not know what all the ingredients were. It had no frosting, and had mini chips in it. I did not see how much he regurgitated, as my wife saw it and cleaned it up. She has since gone to work. I have been keeping a close eye on him. We just played on the bed. He was kicking his legs like a bull, and trying to paw his way under the covers. Seems pretty natural to me. Most notably, he has not been acting lethargically. Thank you so much for the responses. I am hoping I am just over-reacting. |

At this point, it's rather moot that he is *not* lethargic...bc chocolate digests SO slowly in dogs (this is part of the reason it is poisonous to dogs). How long ago did it happen? Do you have hydrogen peroxide at home? |
How is Buddy doing today? |
Buddy is a-okay! He threw up about four more times last night, but I am glad he did. He ended up being somewhat peppy later...like his usual self. Man, that little dog just owns my heart. I don't mind admitting it. If anything had truly been wrong, I don't think I could take it! Thanks for the help and compassion everybody! |
I'm so glad to hear that everything worked out ok! Its amazing how attached we get to our little yorkie furbabies. I have three now and couldn't imagine life without each one of them. |
