me three;) |
Thanks Mary for the information. I'm waiting to call Tom and see who he knows at Davis. I'm trying to make some contact this morning and see the best way to handle in case she requires surgery. If I were in this situation and helpless, I sure hope someone would be their to give a helping hand. Their are so many good people in this world. For some reason, people that have pets are generally the one's with the biggest hearts. Thanks again, God Bless Kathleen |

I wanted to post this info again... Medications will help, probably more than surgery right now. Melody screams because the ammonia levels in her blood have gone to her brain. This is what causes all the neurological problems Krystal is seeing. This means this pup is very toxic. The AB's and Lactulose will immediately begin to remove and limit the amount of ammonia getting into her circulatory system, and will make surgery safer as she will have cleaner blood when she does have the sx. Lactulose can also be given as an enema during a seizure to immediately decrease ammonia levels in the bowel. That Melody have survived this long tells me that she has some part of a functioning liver. The Denamarin helps to protect and regenerate the working parts, while the AB's and Lactulose stop toxins from reaching the liver from the intestines (digesting the food she eats). And about the surgery: Not all pups are good candidates for surgery. The ones that are are young, and have one shunt located outside of the liver. A band (made with milk proteins) is placed around the shunt and closes it off as it absorbs fluid. This takes about 3 weeks to happen. Then, if the liver doesn't throw another shunt, all should be good. If the liver produces another shunt, surgery will need to be performed again. The pups with multiple shunts, and/or internal shunts (inside the liver itself) or MVD (Hepatic Microvascular Dysplasia) are not candidates for surgery. Tests to determine the type of shunting in a pup runs between $500-$1000, and surgery runs between $1400-$4000. The U of T tries to keep the price down as this is such a common problem, and it adds to their research. Hope this helps... I continue to hold Melody and her Mom in my thoughts and prayers, as well as all of those trying so hard to help her. Huggs |

The group I spoke with does not work with anyone in CA.....just a clarification! I did not say no one does them in CA...sorry that was not worded better. Liver shunts are done all over the US. I am happy someone is helping her. It would be nice if, in the future, people communicate that so people know. Thank you for now letting people know. Glad the puppy is going to be cared for..that is all anyone wanted. By the way, there is another liver shunt puppy that needs help. Her owner has been on YT begging for help for some time. A young girl...I forget her info, but maybe someone else knows and can post it so people can help her as well. |

Agreed. |
I am so sorry for not responding I just been spending a lot of time with Melody and making sure she is doing okay. I am in serious awe over all of you with the advice and all the kindness on these forums. Kathleen has been so understanding and wonderful. She has helped so much already. She is so amazing and just talking to her over the phone has lifted my spirits. I seriously can not thank her enough. Melody is sleeping all cuddled up on my bed with Lilly. They love each other so much and play when Melody is able to. I am so blessed to have these two girls and I want Melody to be healthy so she can live a long life with Lilly. Melody is tired from all the playing she did with Lilly this morning. I just can not thank you all for your concerns for my tiny Melody. I will call her vet in the morning and get those medications asap. I will try my best to keep you all updated. |
I will keep you and Melody in my thoughts and prayers. |

I do agree that the pup is better off with the owner, taking her from the home she knows would of been so much more stress on her. I know a rescue would of helped her, but this is so much better on the pup. again thank you. |
I am here and willing to help in anyway I can...my prayers are with Melody, that she will be able to live a long and happy life, and with Krystal, that she has the strength and courage to get Melody the medical help she so desperately needs. I pray for a happy ending to this sad story...a miracle. |
Wow, I too am in awe of the generosity and support shown here.:) |
You guys are the best ! Knowing this puppy is finally getting help thanks to people here is really touching. ladyjane - that's good of you to mention someone else needing advise/help - maybe someone knows who it is can direct them to this thread ? It has a ton of good LS information on it. |

I just cannot remember her name. I am fairly certain she lives in CA also and is young and trying very hard to help her pup. |
I am glad that she is getting help. I just hope that the OP understands that although many vets are experienced with preforming surgery, but this baby needs a vet who specializes in Liver Shunts. UT is one of the best. Dr. Tobias is the best in my opinion, but she is dealing with her husbands illness right now and is not in town often, but there are others who have learned from her who are also great at UT. I know Dr. Center is great also. I am willing to help out in any way I can. My e-mail address is: sallyannfrazier@msn.com if someone needs me. Does anyone know what she is being fed? She needs to be on a special food along with all the medications. This may have already been posted, if it has I am sorry, I am just worried for this tiny baby. |

Keeping Melody in my prayers. Kathleen Thank You |
Little Melody's Update for the Family To all the wonderful family of YT: I know why I stayed on the forum for so long, it's because of all the wonderful people. Sometimes we don't always agree and that's fine because in the long run we all learn from each other. I've received some PM from members and their generosity is just amazing to say the least. I'm so proud to be a member of such a wonder Family because that's what we are in the long run. Krystal will be calling the vet first thing in the morning. I have a call into Tom but probably won't be in touch until tomorrow when he's at his office. He'll know the answers about the vet care available at Davis. My daughter was relived to hear I didn't make the drive to Mammoth Lakes. It wasn't 3 1/2 hours but 5 1/2 hours and with the ice, snow and fog, I'd probably be stuck somewhere in between. I have a dear friend that I was going to pull out of bed this morning to drive with me but she didn't think my idea was that great. They have a cabin in Mammoth and said, their's snow... Kathleen... I know you have a big heart and will do just about anything to save this baby but your sick... and your going into the hospital for surgery. Are you out of your mind... lol maybe but in my heart this was the right decision. Too bad the snow held me up or I would have been there. I know the best decision was to leave Melody with Krystal and her family. With the proper medical care, she should improve. Let's just keep those prayers coming for her recovery. I'll send an update in the morning after Krystal talks to the vet. Thanks again to all the YT family and the concern you all show. God Bless All of You, Kathleen |

Also my vet's best friends dog had an internal shunt done at ucdavis she told me and the dog died and her friend was sorry she had the surgery done. It was a large dog a boxer - UCDAVIS is known for nutrition schooling not shunt surgery - our vet is from there and has phd along with our dentist ran the small animal facility - I can ask them about it if you want and our vet also is friends with dr broome who does the scintigraphies out of tustin and los angeles. If there have been some successful shunt surgeries here then that is great but i have not heard of one yet :( I think my friend in los angeles was quoted $4000 for the surgery here in so cal Also the other person is sasha on here and i have been trying to help her as jean dodds does the bile acid tests in Garden grove she is non profit and it is very cheap and also dr broome is in tustin right by her as well and the scintigraphy is $390 I believe at least it was when they wanted dd to have it and i called a couple years ago. He is the only one to do the scintigraphy in so cal and he operates out of tustin and a few days a week out of Los angeles. |
