Did the groomer hurt Mr. Big? My groomer came home last night to groom Mr. Big and Sushi. She set up in the middle of the living room, right in front of me, where I could see and hear everything all the time from the kitchen. Nothin out of the ordinary. Then she took him to the bathroom for his bath. I was not there but didn't sound like there was anything unpleasant going on, Big is very chill in the bath. Anyways, the groomer left and everythingh was normal, Biggie with a hot new puppy cut.Since this morning, everytime I touch him or try to pick him up he whimpers. He's also shivering. I put a sweater on him and the shivering got better. But he still doesn't like to be picked up, he squeaks. While he was sitting on my lap I touched him everywhere, no problems. But everytime Missy or Sushi came near him, he would growl at them, very unusual of Mr. Big. Could it be related to the grooming session last night? there are no cuts or bruises on him. he just seems to be sore. He walks ok, although I did notice a very minor limp a few times, but then again I might be just imagining it because i'm looking for something. Any idea what I should be looking for? what I should do? Please please help. |
wow that is odd but trust your gut :( have you looked him over to see if there are any burns or anything or cuts? So sorry :( |
Thats strange. How old is Mr. Big? Is he well behaved for grooming? |
Hmmm. This is strange especially since it was in your home and you didn't hear or notice anything unuaual..? This is the same groomer you've seen before? From your post, I gather he was normal after the vet left last night and you noticed the change in behavior this am. correct?? Could he have gotten hurt during the night, maybe? |
just thought of something did she express anal glands check each side of his anus to see if anything is going on there |
Is the limping in the front or the back ? If the back get his knees checked. That's how we discovered knee problems in 2 diff dogs. Never any problem running or jumping but they hold themselves diff on a wet slippery surface and tense up a bit during bath time . So one had surgery and the other is fine as long as I use a bath mat when I bath her and am careful toweling her back legs. |
Hi, I just came across your post. Has there been any new developments since you posted last? Hopefully those strange symptoms went away on its own. However, If he still cries or is uncomfortable when picked up you should get him in to the vet for a physical exam as soon as possible. I say this because one time Bailey was feeling unwell after he received his vaccine and when I called the vet they asked whether he was in pain or crying when picked up. (luckily he wasn't) The vet said that it was an important symptom to watch for and if it happens to bring him in ASAP. Has Mr. Big received a vaccine recently by any chance? In any case, I would get him checked since it sounds very unusual. |
Has there been any scratching, redness or a rash? Gizmo acted this way once after a grooming visit and it turned out that he had a staph infection from the grooming supplies the groomer used. He was fine immediately after and then started having some of the same issues the next day and then started with the scratching, redness and rash. |
Just checking to see how Mr. B is doing. |
Hope he's fine, just checking for an update... |
How's Mr. Big? any update??? |
Hi all, Sorry I didn't get back to your posts earlier. I was away on a mini vacation, came back late last night. I left the kids, including Biggie, with my usual dogsitter, whom I trust more than anyone. I told her the story and told her to look for signs, and see if his squeaking gets any better. Obviously I was sick to my stomach worrying about him while being away, but I knew he was in good hands. I came back last night , and Biggie is doing great. No more crying. I have no idea what happened or what it was, but looks like he's back to his normal self now. In answer to some of your questions: He is very very well behaved while being groomed, or ANYTHING being done to him for that matter. Never cries, never objects. Heck, he even gets his shots without a single peep from him. So come to think of it, even it there was something funky going on during the grooming session that was hurting him or making him uncomfortable, I'm not surprised that I didn't hear anything. The only thing I did notice was that he was squirming a bit when she was lifting his arms to shave his chest and underarms. He even gave out a tiny little yelp while doing that. Maybe that's what did it. It was the front legs, around the chest area. It was hard to tell if it was the front legs ir the chest. I don't know if she did anything to the anal glands, I doubt it tohugh. And didn't see or notice anything unusual around the back anyways. It is kind of a new groomer that I have been using, and this was Biggie's second session with her. She was recommended by a beighbor, and they have been happy with her for years now. But then again, Biggie is VERY small and VERY fragile, so maybe she is not used to working with a little squirt like him, and the fact that he is very quiet (almost too quiet) didn't help her gauge her "force" either. He was doing ok the night of, and everything started the next morning. I inspected everywhere, no cuts, no bruises, no rashes, nothing visible. Anyways, I'm still keeping an eye on him, but as of last night, he seems to be doing just fine. Will keep you guys posted if anything changes. |

Update on Mr. Big: I went home after work yesterday and picked him up to say hi, and he squeaked again! I said: ok, that's it Biggie, off you go to the vet. I called and they said they will see him if I go and wait a little bit. The vet examined him. Looks like he has a pulled muscle on the right side around the neck area. He seemed to be in pain every time the vet tried to turn his head that way. He put him on anti-inflammatory medication for now, and he will follow up in a week. But I can see how much of a difference it has already made. He is doing his "circles" again, and doesn't cry when picked up any more. He still does seem a little stiff, but way better than before, more active too. |
