9 weeks female wont stop scratching herself. Hi. I have a 9 weeks yokie female. she is scratching her ear and body all the time. I looked and couldnt find anything unusual. Is it because she is about to change her coat? dry skin? I gave her, her first bath a week ago using baby shampoo that was recommended by the breeder. Thanks |
Did you rinse her really well after the bath ? If so, then I'd have someone check her for ear mites - you can google them to see what they look like (they leave residue in the ear) and are easily treatable It's also possible she may have a flea problem since she's scratching all over -those suckas can be really hard to spot !! Your yorkie is very very young so I wouldn't self-treat - I'd see a vet about it if you can, |
i would have her scraped for mites as demodex and scabies can cause itching more scabies though (sarcoptic mange) look in ears as ears will be black if ear mites |
Also look for dog lice. Those are really tiny and will look like tiny grains of sand or dirt. Usually found concentrated around the head area and between the eyes but can be all over the body. They don't really move so you can be fooled into not knowing they are live creatures. If you find what looks like a little black bit of dirt look at it with a very good magnifying glass to see if it has legs. Flea shampoo and a spray from the Vet safe for a pup that young should work. Advantage Multi would be good for followup but I think she is too young, minimum age for that I believe is 12 weeks but I would be reluctant to use it on a yorkie pup that young. |
Hot Rod had very dry skin when he came to us and we finally got him on a medicated shampoo and medicated conditioner. We had also switched his food. I have finally come to think that he may be allergic to chicken. Good luck in finding what is making your baby scratch herself. :) Welcome to YT. |
I would be carful about flea shampoo if she may need it, some of that stuff is not very safe, if she has fleas regular ol dawn dishwashing soap and rinse well |
Advantix can be used on puppies age 7 weeks and up. You will need the smallest dose available. I think it is the one up to 10 pounds. I only use 1/2 of that dose on our puppy. Its a once a month. The nice thing about advantix is it will kill whats on them and then repels for a month. If you have cats you will need to seperate the cats from the dog for about 24hours. Advantix is toxic to cats. Taking her to the vet isnt a bad idea... Just to confirm that there is nothing else wrong. Good luck! |
Thank you all for your suggestions!! so I cheched for lice, ear mites, and I dont see anything that looks like sand or small animal... but there is some dandruff. I think its dry skin. The breeder whosold me the dog, told me to put few drops of olive oil in her food. what do you guys think? I also noticed that her hair color is changing, the roots I mean, maybe its that? |
allergies She also could have skin allergies,if she were mine, I wouldn't fool around,I would immediatley take her to your vet.:animal36:animal36 |
