goat milk is good as it is the closest to the mothers milk you can use goat yogurt as well as a probiotic 2 hrs after the antibiotic - you can get it at lassens or whole foods just a small amount

Coccidia is a tough one especially in a tiny.

Please tell me.. if I get a canned food, which brand/kind would be best to get? I would also not have chosen this dry food for her, but read that whatver she started on is what she should coninue on until a slow transition at 8-12 months. You all think it is ok to switch her slowly now?

I too thought that about the shots! My Vet also said she can't guarantee the shots the breeder gave her and wanted to start her at square 1 again. I plan on just continuing on the schedule as if she started at 8 weeks. I do NOT agree with over doing it. I also am afraid she may have allergies. THere are times when she scratches like crazy. THe Vet said her ears looked amazingly clean.

She has no "stuck Poop". I am one who cleans her bottom EVERY time she poops. Call me a nut, but that's what I do! :D

As for last night, I am feeling very worn down from Christmas and have come down with a sore throat and feel YUCKY!! :sickie: Went to be at about 12am. Molly, seemed to get a burst of energy. She cried at 2am again, I took her out to go potty and all she wanted to do was play! Layed on the newspaper, she went and ate her food and drank water. Still no potty! Kept putting he in the crate and out again to go potty. She would not go! I was afraid to tell her "no, go night night" only to have her poop or pee in her crate. I even took her to her playpen because I was feeling so sick and tired, but she cried there for quite some time I had to bring her back to me. Eventually she went potty. Always pees first and at least 10 minutes later poops. I am sooooooooo WORN out and tired!! I REALLY need to get some sleep!!! Please tell me is there anything I can do to get her to sleep better at night.

I also want something better than newspaper for her potty. I am considering these two links. Please check them out and let me know your opinions and/or experience with either. Molly will only be going potty in the house.

Yes I have already read that link and even forwarded it to the breeder when she tried to say that I was the cause of her diarrhea and this article cleary states that this came from the breeder and not us! Since we tested her feces 2 days after coming to live with us.

She is currently on Albon, but we are switching it out tomorrow for the Tribrissen. I am a big advocate for probiotics (my dad used to make the best on the market.) As for metronidizole.. I only know that med as being Flagyl. Not sure if either of these meds Molly is on are a form of that. ???

Canned Food?
 

I am searching Petco's site to place an order for some things right now for Molly. How about Avoderm canned puppy food? Has Avacodo oil in it. I was told that avacodos are on the bad list for these dogs. Is the oil safe? Or Natural Choice. Both seem to have decent ingredietns. I did notice one of them having garlic spice in it and the breeder bad food list says garlic is bad for them. Please tell me which canned I should order. THank YOU!!!

Just make sure she is eating and drinking around the clock.. if she was with her momma at this size not matter the age she would most likely be getting some milk from momma on top of her eating puppy food..

I worry about her size.. that is pretty tiny and she just cannot afford to lose weight.. Jim (woogie man) will reply to you should you need his help.. He is very good and a breeder also..

food allergy is only 10% of the time and she is too young to have allergies at this point i would think BUT here is what it could be demodex mite - where is she itching? Since she was so young and this breeder may not be the best this could be the cause for itching so have vet do a scraping and see. First deal with coccidia and get that cleared up as that is more severe. Many are using promeris for demodex so that is something if it is. Demodex is from the mother dog and it is a sign of a poor immune system. Another mite is sarcoptic mange scabies and that is contagious to humans so on next visit i would have a scraping done it is not painful or anything but sometimes it is really hard to see this little things so you may have to do a few scrapings.

What food are you feeding now?

it is a dry time of year as well so just like our skin is dry so is theirs if you are running the heater

Someone posted that your baby is also on metronidazole. I only saw from your post that she was on albon. If she's on both, why is that? If her only issue is coccidia, the albon should clear that.

Coccidia usually is easily treatable but a heavy infestation can cause the symptoms to be more severe and take longer to clear up.

You do need to watch out for dehydration since she has diarrhea. To check for dehydration, pull up some skin along her back. It should spring back to its normal position fairly quickly. If it doesn't, she needs more fluids. Pedialite would be good for that.

If you are trying to get your baby to eat, don't worry too much about what brand of canned to give her just now. You could just get some Pedigree canned at the grocery for now. Just get the paste kind and not the chunky. The chunky has wheat gluten in it to make the gravy. If you have to order food to get a good brand, don't let that stop you from getting something for her now.

You also asked about what to use for her to go potty on. I always have used newspaper since puppies can get their nails caught in the pee pads. If you want to, you could put a pee pad under the paper to make it more absorbent but have the paper on top. If she's used to the pads and doesn't have a problem with her nails catching on them, just stay with that. No need to change what works.

One thing about the Nutri-Cal/karo use. It's great to get a pup's blood sugar levels up but shouldn't be used too much. When you do use it, follow up with feeding her some protein. If a pup is eating well, it really isn't necessary to give added sugar. I keep some on hand in case of a hypoglycemic episode or if I'm hand feeding a small baby (I mix a little karo in with goat's milk for hand feeding) but don't normally give it to a healthy pup that's eating well.

Your baby is very small so do keep a close eye on her. Even once she's over the coccidia, the best thing to do is to make sure she eats well and doesn't overdo it while playing. Limit her playtime until she's older and has gained some weight and always feed her after playing. The little ones can crash very easily.

No she is not on Flagyl. I am not at all familiar with Albon and wondered if it was some sort of dirivative to it for pups that I was not aware of. Figured it wasn't but ya never know. I ordered : Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice Canned Dog Food. I hope that one is ok since I ordered a case. I also ordered goats milk and more nutri-cal. Someone said I should be giving it for a year. I have to say what I do not like about it is that it has sodium benzoate in it and we here avoid that like tha plague. I would think taking it regularly for a long time could cause them to get cancer. Just how much do you suggest I give to Molly? And is there a more natural alternative to it without the preservative? I will also go and buy some Karo tomorrow and a can of something to feed her until the case arrives.

As for the potty thing, I really would like to get one of the above things. Am wondering about the grass one???

Hi. I'm just reading the thread. If you are placing an order (probably already did) I would go with the Wellness Puppy. I like the chicken forumula. It's a little pricy but it is very good. I also personally, like to boil some fresh chicken breast, brown rice and carrots. I chop it all up just like canned food and I mix some in with the canned. Also, I would pick up Nutrical Puppy. I have a tiny also. We got her at 16 weeks and she was only 1.7 ounces. She's now 5.5 months old and weighs 2.5 ounces. You have take a lot of care with them. Personally the breeder should have never let her go at 9 weeks old, especially since she's so small. And, you need to feed her small meals through out the day. I usually did morning, afternoon and late evening and maybe a small snack before bedtime. I also would give her some Nutrical in the morning and also before she went to bed. As far as the parasites, that too is dangerous in a little one. You're not alone with that. My girl had Giardia when we got her, and she had a slight kennel couph (Breeder said the kennel couph came from the vaccine. She was honest that she still had a risidual couph and she kept her a little longer to be sure she was ok) after the giardia, cleared we then noticed she had little pieces of rice in her poop which turned out to be tape worm. Thankfully, she is fine now. There are many many knowledgeable people here on YT that will help you I'm sure, but if there is anything I can help you with or questions please feel free to PM me. The main thing is with your little one is to keep her sugar levels regular. If she is lethargic, I would give her some Nutrical. Elaine

Personally, I don't use Nurti-Cal at all. I use light karo syrup. I wouldn't recommend against the Nutri-Cal but I have gotten away from it. My vet has told me that karo gets into their system faster (5 minutes vs 20 minutes for Nutri-Cal). Since my primary concern is getting something into their system fast, I opt for the karo.

I already stated I don't think a healthy pup that is eating well needs added sugar. Giving too much added glucose can interfere with the body's ability to produce its own. Glucose supplements can be a life saver but are no substitute for a dog eating well.

Nutro Dog Food has been recalled in the past and is still under investigation for possibly causing illness and death in pets. I think there are many better choices you could make.
