Take seizure puppies to vet immediately! I posted a topic not to long ago on my puppy Chewie and his battles with hypoglycemia. Well, last night at 1:30 a.m. Chewie had four seizures, one right after the other. I rushed him to the emergency vet clinic ($500 later), but they told me they couldn't find the source and released him to me, telling me I should take him to his regular vet in the morning. Well, within 30 minutes of me taking him home, my precious Chewie passed away. He started having one last siezure, barking and whining and then blood started coming from his nose. I tried to perform CPR on him on the way back to the emergency clinic, but it was too late, he was already gone. They still had no answers for me when I took him in. They did all the blood tests, ruled out it being a liver problem and his blood sugar level was completely normal. My regular vet called me and told me that she did not have an answer for the cause of seizures, but she believed his brain swelled to much inbetween all the seizures and there was nothing that could be done. I am so sick over this. My reason for posting this is that I have seen a lot of you post about how your puppy is having seizures, but you are waiting until the next morning to take them to the vet. This could be the difference between life and death for you baby. I believe I waited too long taking him to the emergency clinic. However, they were also incompetent by letting me take him home when he was more sick upon being released than he was when I brought him in. The only consolidation to all of this is that atleast he died in my husband's arms instead of on a cold metal table surrounded by the uncaring staff of that clinic. The vet made me believe that my puppy's seizures were just low blood sugar, so everytime he had one, I'd load him up on nutrical or Karo syrup. Well, they were wrong this time about his problem and that's why he is no longer with us. My regular vet wants to do an autopsy on my pup because she believes that the emergency clinic was responsible for not taking the correct procedures in saving his life. They were more concerned about how much money I could drop at the time. Please, please please don't wait to take your puppy if he isn't responding to sugar during a seizure, or has more than one in a 24hr period. Learn from the heartbreak of my experience. Even the smallest hesitation can mean disaster. I have so much pain in my heart for my Chewie right now, but at least I know he isn't suffering anymore. |
Im so sorry for your loss... Hopefully your knowledge and the things you have learned will help someone in the future. Your and Chewie are in my thoughts. |
My heart just breaks for you, I'm so sorry. Thank you for this post, it will help save someone's yorkie one day. My thoughts are with you and your prescious angel. |

My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry that you have been through all of this ..Please let us know the results of the autopsy. You and your family will be in my prayers for your loss. |
I'm so sorry for your loss of your baby...sherry |
I am soooo very sorry ---- my chi had a hypogly. seizure a few weeks ago and it has totally freaked me out. I have watched her like a hawk. What on earth do you think could have happened? You are in my prayers and I hope you find the answers to your questions. Sooooo very sad. |
I am so sorry !! That was so heartbreaking .......I'm so sorry for your loss of Chewie and I want to commend you for saying this. I've never seen a seizure but I think you're so right - on the first one I would fly to my vet also, but I think many people just don't realize how truly life threatening they can be - it's a fine line between hypoglycemic attacks and seizures ...but by you posting this - maybe you WILL help the next person who waits it out - or doesn't realize how serious they are. Again - I'm sorry for your loss...that was very sad and hard to read...I can't imagine what you're going through. |
How heartbreaking. I am sure that you will help save another pup with this story. I know that Chewie is in Heaven waiting for you to come run and play with him again! You story was very touching, and at least he had lots and lots of love surrounding him during his last few moments. I am sorry for your loss. Hannah |
So sorry for your loss. These seizures seem a little too common. What the heck is going on? I will say a prayer for you and your family. Roxy's mom, Maria  |

I am so sorry to hear about your lost . I'll pray for you . |
Thank you everyone for your wonderful replies. Chewie was 3 months old, so I hadn't had him too long, but long enough to fall absolutely in love with him. After I faxed over the bloodwork report to my vet (because the emergency clinic never faxed her the info after she personally requested it from them) she informed me that his seizures stemmed from the hypoglycemia, but he had a brain abnormality that caused the seizures to cause more brain damage than normal and once they stacked up, his little body just couldn't hold up. She said that no matter what I would have done it would have happened anyway. He was just a weak little baby from the get go. The breeder has offered me a replacement pup in her next litter, but how do you replace a baby you love so much? I don't know if I can accept the new puppy or not. I love Yorkies, but I'm so afraid of being heartbroken again. I guess we'll see when the time comes. For now though, just want to thank all of you for the help you have supplied me with over the last month or so concerning Chewie. Again, thank you all, Jamie |
I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know how you feel. It is so heartbreaking. Give it time. someday you will be ready for another Yorkie and I know you will always love and remember Chewy. My first Yorkie had to be put to sleep she had many problems. and I miss her too. But my Mickey and Minnie bring me many days of happiness. |
