Questions about Giardia? I added a new puppy to our family on Friday. She is a seven month old little Biewer. She is so pretty, and tiny. We got her home around 9 pm on Friday night. She did not eat very much, but I thought it was because of the trip. Saturday she ate a little, but would not eat any soft food which is unusual. She will eat a few pieces of the Diamond puppy food that was sent here with her. Today she ate a little, but when she went poo it was kinda runny with blood drops in it. I decided to take her to the emergency clinic. Once there they told me that she looked to only have had one set of shots and was at risk of parvo. They tested her for that and did a Giardia Snap test and a Fecal Exam. She was neg. for Parvo, but positive for Giadia. They gave her Metroniadole 50 mgs which she is suspose to take 1/2 per day. They gave her a shot with Subcutaneous fluids. They also told me she had an eye infection and a Grade 4 Luxating Patella in her back left leg (which blew me away). The vet said that her knee cap was dislocated and she could not pop it back in. Haley (my new little girl) does not limp, or hold that leg up at all. I know that is a huge problem, but right now I am more worried about her not eating and the risk of dehydration or low blood sugar. She will not eat nurtra cal. When we got home I boiled some chicken and rice. She ate some of that, and now she is sleeping. Any info concering the symptoms of Giarida would greatly help me. Thanks for listening. Hi, first congrats on getting your first Biewer. They are like potatoe chips --you won't stop with just one, lol. Giardia is common to stress, change of environent, change of water, etc. The medications will help stop the infection. I would give her a little pumpkin as well to settle her tummy. Can I ask how old she is? Her weight? I am curious why she only had one set of vaccinations. |
She is 7 months old. I was giving a certificate of a pre purchase exam that gave the okay for her to fly. It stated that she was given a set of shots. I dont know if that was the only set of shots she has had. The lady I got her from said she would need shots on her 1st birthday in May. She weighed 1 lb. 6 oz today at the emergency clinic. She is adorable. I just Love her little tail. |

1 pound and 6 ounces at 7 months??? Are you sure she is that old? Could she be just 7 weeks? |

Who was her breeder? |

I've known her for longer than seven weeks. I have wanted her since August. She is tiny. My Tenci only weighed 1 pound when I brought her home at six months. She was actually alot smaller than Haley is. Tenci is closer to three pounds now. I am hoping Haley will be able to gain too. |

She is a cutie! I don't know much about Gardia, hopefully more people will come on to help you out with that. Sending good wishes that she gets healthy and gains weight for you. :) |

Was her sister small also? Do you mind telling me who the breeder in Florida is? |
You might have to force the nutrical into her. This poor little girl has more issues than I realized when I first read this. Stress did not cause her Gardia as she came to you this way. There is a ton of information on the internet about Gardia but it might be a long term battle with it. I am so glad you took her to the vet right away due to her size...You do have to get some food in her so the nutrical will help but if she is not crazy about the chicken then you might try the Little Cesars (I hate it) but it is more important she eats or baby Jr food. Will it hurt her to give her the 1/2 of the Metronidazole the vet gave me for her? |
Omce the giardia is under control she will probably start to put on some weight. if she does ot eat on her own, I would syringe food into her.. That will also help with dehydration |

i hate giardia!! I HATE Giardia!!!! did the vet tell you that it is contagious to other dogs and to humans?? you must be careful. clean alot with a bleach solution and the dogs pass it to eachother thru contaminated water, like their water bolw. one vet actualy told me to change and wash the water bowl every time puppy drinks from it.....that's crazy!! but i got little disposable paper condiment cups. this giardia issue went on for about 3 months. lost of money to the vet. there are a couple different view points oin giardia. some vets will treat it until the fecal test comes back negative. other vets say it;s ok if there is a slight positive if there are no symptoms. each dog can have diffferent sympotoms or no symptoms, some dogs may have loud noises coming from the stomach or clear/white jelly like in their stool.. but if there was blood in the stool, this sounds like a serious symptom that has been left untreated. you should tell the person you got the puppy from. we treated with 5 rounds of medicine from the vet. and also a natural product, that worked the best called kocci free from amber technologies. they also have another produts to use incombination if the kocci free alone doesnt work. but the most important thing is to make sure the puppy keeps eating, becuase what the virus will do is just digest everything without taking the nutrition out of it and get rid of it. so sometimes puppies with giarradia are pooping a lot and in small pieces. i think dogs can get it from tap water or bad dog food. also after treating and curing it's good to get a probiotic to restore the lining of the digestive system becuase the meds are hard on the system. hope that helps!! giarradia is a stubborne germ, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning all the time;) |
