Honking How do they diagnose collapsing Trach? My five year old yorkie is honking all the time. She is playful, eating, taking her walk but seems the breathing is getting worse. She does have bad allergies and the vet has her on Prednisone. Thanks. |
Here's some vids: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...d-trachea.html Has she seen a vet for this? They take x-rays to see if there's a collapsing trachea. I've read that it's also sometimes difficult to catch on x-ray bc it might not happen at that time...My vet rubs the throat & if there's no honking sound or episode, most likely it's not collapsing or collapsed trachea but reverse sneezing. |
My Zada was/is a honker and in Oct. she had a really bad spell, after a long walk, that sounded like an asthma attack. She then wheezed all night. We slept with her because we were so worried. (We still do). I took her to the Vet. and she x-rayed her lungs first and found little white streaks and put her on clavimox for a couple weeks. Then we went back for a throat x-ray and is when they saw it was her trachea. Now before we take her anywhere, we give her a few drops of Rescue Remedy to help keep her calm, otherwise she is constantly "honking". She can't wear any harness or clothes that even remotely touch her throat or it triggers her coughing. |
Collapsing trachea is not always evident on x-rays. I had a yorkie years ago who had one and it had shown on x-rays. He had to have surgery and the surgeon who did the surgery checked the x-ray and it did not show...the trachea looked open. Well, he almost died following the surgery due to the manipulation of the trachea (he had cervical disc surgery) and also the intubation. They can often palpate the front of the neck to see if they cough, but sometimes that can be due to tracheobronchitis .... but could be tracheal collapse. I believe they will often treat with antibiotics first to see if that clears it up. Sometimes you can actually feel the tracheal collapse...I have a foster now with a CT and it is really strange to feel the front of his neck when he is coughing a lot. It actually vibrates. When they are that bad, the diagnosis is easily made. A bronchoscope is probably a definitive way to get a diagnosis, but I honestly would not do that since there are risks involved. In time, with age, a collapsed trachea becomes very obvious. The surgery for it is not highly successful so it comes down to treating the symptoms which can be done with or without a diagnosis. That is my opinion of course...some people do opt for surgery. |
My mom had a shi tzu that honked. The doctor said it was like asthma related to her allergies. |
prednisone? is your dog gaining weight as weight can put pressure on the trachea and there is a fatty deposit in front of the trachea. Have you tried other things prior to prednisone for allergies? |

wow those videos are great. thanks. Is CT always that obvious..wheezie and creaky sounding? You can't miss that sound, and thank goodness I have never heard it from my dog. However, at our first visit, my vet told me that he had CT, and that is was "nothing to worry about"...well doing some research I learned it is in fact something to worry about. But the sound my dog makes, matches up more to the reverse sneeze. let's hope that 's the case for the OP as well. |

Hello, My little guy flaco is also making honking noises but is nothing like the 3 of those video shown. I never have a camera available when it is happening but I did find another YT video that is having the same problem as Flaco. Here is the video: It happens when he is eating to quickly or gets extremely excited. Normal running around doesn't trigger it. I guess what im asking is if this is a normal issue or something that should be looked at by a vet? |

the way to stop reverse sneeze quickly is to cover the nostrils and open the mouth to get them to breathe through mouth not nose - it has to do with their palat being soft and triggers the reverse sneeze as they try to breath through nose and triggers the palat issue so you want to get them to breathe out of the mouth and then it stops immediately |

Good to know! Zoey makes those noises when she is herself and playing/running hard. |
