Ear Pain Scratching & Yelping My friends Yorkie has had an ongoing ear problem that the vet has treated with antibotic's oral & a shot and also a steriod shot. Nothing seems to be working! Her ears are not red. She is very lathargic and just not her playful self! Anyone have any advise? |
OtiCalm Do you know what meds and wash she is using? If the wash is alcohol based that could be the problem. Tell her to get some OtiCalm. I have cleared up many ear infections with that alone. Alcohol based ear cleaners can over dry the ears and cause chronic ear problems. And some vets only give meds with no wash. They need both. The ears need to be washed before the meds are put in. And if the meds say 3 times a day then it is very important to use them as often as prescribed, however often that is depending on the med. This could also be caused from food allergy. |
Is the pain and itching on the outer ear or does it seem to be occurring inside the ear? Any odor coming from the ear? Any debris coming from the ear? Any swelling on the ear flap (outer ear)or around the ear where it is attached to the head? Does the dog shake it's head alot? Or lose balance when walking? Or walk in circles? Or is the head tilted to one side? Is the dog running a fever (temp>102.0F)?Does the dog eat and drink normally? Is it one ear that is affected or both ears? |
thanks Lillymae...I have passed the info to my friend! KJC, I will find out all the answer to your questions! I just spoke to my friend....her poor furbaby has been up all night crying! This has been an ongoing problem. The vet says her ears are clean and clear! My friend is going to see a new vet this morning! I let you guys know what she finds out! |
Is she absolutely sure she is scratching at the ears? She could be having a neck problem. I had a little yorkie that had a deformity at the base of her skull and she appeared to be scratching at her ears. Turns out she was actually trying to scratch her neck area. This deformity unfortunately is one of those things we see in some yorkies. Is there any way you could get a video of her baby scratching to put on here? If I could see her in action I might be able to tell. It's one of those things you have to know what your looking for. |

Hi, I am new to this forum and in a search for Yorkies who have dealt with chiari malformation came across your message. My little Yorkie is a rescue dog, and I also noticed that he was scratching towards his ear. Took him to the vet, and his ears were clean and not infected so he was treated as if he had an allergy. Also, he yelped once in awhile but did not show any other signs that he was hurting. When he started favoring his front leg is when my vet sent him to a neurologist. A MRI indicated vertebrae disease and chiari malformation. After weeks of treatment on steriods and pain meds, he did not improve so surgery was the next step. Long story short (and many, many dollars later)...he has just come of out of surgery and is resting comfortably. Hopefully he falls into that 80% that do not require additional surgery due to scar tissue forming. Hope this helps in finding the reason why the Yorkie is in pain. Good luck! |
Any update? Seeing you're on the east coast I want to mention that Yorkies can be prone to picking up mites if they are anywhere near wildlife or cross paths with rabbits, deer, etc. It can be seen as tiny white flakes around the outer edges of their ears, feet, genitals, and on the tummy or ribs. treating with Revolution can begin to resolve itching within 24-48 hours. |
Generally that type of ear problem is caused by food allergies. All the medications in the world won't help if it is. My bet is she's feeding some kind of kibble. I would take the dog off all kibble and ALL commercial treats, and then put on brown rice, sweet potatoes and red meat, and if that clears things up in a couple weeks or month, then just keep with the home cooked diet, but only add one new food for a few days at a time. This way she will know if there are any "real" food allergies. |
