Blood in poop...help! This is about Sushi's maltese brother: This is what I have noticed about Mr. Big in the last couple of days (once yesterday and once today): He goes potty on the peepad, he poops, the poop is not 100% solid, a bit runny. NOT diarrhea by any means, just a bit "shiny" and loose, you know! And then when he's done, he keeps straining just a bit more, and all that comes out is two-three drops of fluids with a bit of blood in it!!!! Should I be scared? Anything I can do?? Please please help |

It could be worms. I have seen it just like you described. My friend who breeds malteses had a litter, one puppy did that poo one day ... 3 days later everyone including mommy had runny poop. Now i can not remember if it was Gyardia , coccidia, or else??? It has been at least 4 years. Anyways, i would treat it sooner rather than later. She had a little work nursing them all back to hard stools, besides puppies are frail anyways one should always be careful. You could try doing the pyrantel, and doing the "panacur" for 5 days, it will kill most of worms except for the coccidia. For that one you will need a prescription. The only problem with trying to treat just at home without being sure is that if it is not worms, you may be delaying treatment , which could turn out more costly and harder to fix. Good luck XOXO |
It might be best to take your baby to the vet. Several months ago my little one had those symptoms and it turned out to be coccidia. A simple treatment if caught early, but it can be very very bad if left untreated. Good luck, hugs! |

Could it be due to sudden change of diet? My furbutts have been on home cooked food for a few months now, until I ran out of food for them three days ago (I have a very sick/old dog at home) and decided to give them kibbles for now, until I get a chance to cook for them on the weekend. It was the same kibbles that they were on up until a few months ago before I changed their diet to home-cooked, but they had not had it for a few months, which i think would be considered "sudden change of diet". I guess?? Could that be the reason? |

Puppies/dogs can certainly have loose stools because of stress or change in diets, but if coccidia is present, it will need treated. Blood in the stool is always reason for veterinary attention IMHO. It is so much easier to treat early onset rather than later when the puppy is very very ill from it. They go down hill so very fast and it is an inexpensive treatment. I should have asked. How old are your dogs? I don't know how mature dogs are affected by coccidia or if they are. I thought you were talking about young puppies. |

I think the coccidia causes colitis and that causes the blood, but i would think that is a puppy or weak immunity dog disease. You really need to read this website..blood in the stool could mean many, many illness in a dog..even parvo. Even if you don't see blood tomorrow you should take a sample into your vet along with your vet. Dog Health Blood in Stool |

Unfortunately parvo is a disease that is way way way worse than what you read about. I have seen it once and hopefully i will never witness it again. years ago , i was a teenager, someone that was friends with my family had it and my father went to help, ended up in the vets but nothing could save the dog. My dad knew it right away because of the smell.... i will probably never forget that smell again my self... She would know, but she definetelly should CALL HER VET tomorrow and ask them what they think of it 1 XOXO |
