I could really use some information out there for Gracie, Gracie is a year and half and just got over a uti, and the vet wanted more urine to check to see if it still remains, she did see some protein in her urine and wants me to continue on her antiabotic for 7 more days, she then wants to check it again with some other expensive testing. I really worried that Gracie might have kidney problems, anyone have any suggestions or experiences with this, please let me know. Thanks :)Kellie and :aimeeyorkGraice | did they do urinalysis and culture as a culture is what determines what antibiotic will kill the bacteria infection and it takes 2-3 days to come back so if they just did urinalysis then that will not give you enough info and the vet is just guessing by using clavamox but if this is not gone get the culture done. Did you do free catch urine off of back of wee wee pad or did they do systo which is a needle in the bladder? Personally I do not like the needle in the bladder and will not allow it. I just went to pharmacy got sterile eye dropper and sterile bottle from vet and i suctioned off back of wee wee pad first pee of the morning - I took her in a room flipped over wee wee pad and she peed i suctioned it all up and took to vet. If it is too early then put the cup in the refridgerator and run it over first thing when they open but fridge will keep the bacteria - - I just had this done as i was concerned about my girl as her vulva was swollen and red and the urinalysis came back perfect and the culture should be back tomorrow afternoon but he feels it will be negative and he said the sample was excellent and at first he did not want to take it and wanted to do systo but i said NO WAY and turns out it was fine anyway so if you want to try that i would - it is not as sterile BUT it is much less harsh on the dog.
I would not worry about kidney disease and if you are concerned about it then have the blood panel done as if kidney disease urine is a good indicator but also your dogs Creatinine level will be off - if bun alone is off that is dehydration but if creatinine and bun are off then there is a problem.
You need to try to get your dog to drink more water and the best way is to change water 3-4 times a day if you can. I prefer spring water. My maltese tested one time before dental with a little protein and her bun was off but creatinine was fine but she will not drink water unless it is fresh and when we put a fresh bowl down she runs over and drinks it up so we try to do this often for her to get her to drink more water. Also dh brothers cat had kidney issues and vet told them to put a bowl of water in every room so cat had it readily available.
I strongly recommend probiotics for dogs having issues with bacteria as well -I used dds plus from the vitamine shoppe in the fridge 2 capsules 30 min before food in am and it will help. There are also cranberry items for dogs that can help
Do not stress too much and let me know more of what is going like how was urine captured, etc and what expensive test they want to do. The cultures are not cheap as i have had a fecal culture, skin culture and now urine culture and they take more time and are more expensive as more labor intesive for the lab therefore more costly to you |
