seizure in 1lb yorkie my 13 week old 1pound yorkie had a rabies shot and vaccine yesterday at 3pm. He seemed fine all last night, ate a little and I gave nutrical. He seemed sleepy but ok this morning but at 9am I walked by the playpen and he was having a seizure. I gave nutrical and rushed him to the vet. He was only here 2 hours. They gave him stat and ran blood work and did a fecal. His sister, also the same size had the same thing at the vet and she is fine. He seems mostly ok but is NOT eating. I am giving nutrical and rebound. He likes those and takes them well. is there anything I need to know that the vet didn't tell me? he only said it was low sugar... I would like to hear from anyone who had a similar situation. |
You need to get him eating something or he will just continue to have the hypoglycemia. Nutrical is just a quick fix |
What vet would give a rabie shot at 13 weeks? I am sorry for you and your little guy, but to answer your question, what you needed to know is that they do not get rabies shots at 1 pound and 13 weeks. I would not go back to that vet. |

This is sad I hope your baby is ok, Puppies under 6 months can fly without the rabies shot. You're vet should know this, when I bought my yorkies I was told by the breeders to NOT give the rabies vaccine till at least 5 months of age. My vet didn't give Maddie her's till she was over 2lbs. It is not uncommon to have a reaction to this vaccine even in larger dogs. My 4-5lb yorkie is not tollerent to it at all and has had a reaction both times that he got it. Alot of good vets will also have you give them benadryl before as a precautionery. keep us posted, I really hope that he starts feeling better soon. |

Oh no! I agree with all the others... your puppy is not required to have a rabies shot to travel at such a young age. If you look half way down this page I think it shows you the schedule. I'm really sorry about your pup getting the seizure - they can be scary. Dr-Dodds-ChangingVaccProtocol |

I don't know about puppies flying w/o the rabies shot as we've never flown, but I'd definitely say that it was risky to give the shot to one so tiny! Sophie had her rabies shot at 4 months old and did fine, so I don't think it is completely ridiculous to give one to a puppy under 6 months which is what seems to be getting several people upset. She weighed over 3 lbs, however, and with yours being so small I don't think the vet did the right thing. Could it be another problem other than the shot? |
