Acute Diarrhea but otherwise normal We came home early this morning to find our 13 month old male yorkie had diarrhea. I know that he did NOT get into anything. He's still very much himself, running, playing, but he also still wants to eat. I know that feeding him his regular diet is only going to aggravate it. I do not want to take him away from food for a long period of time so should I do boiled chicken and white rice for him? How often and how much? He's about 7lb. Thank you for your advice.:) |
Canned pumpkin (not pie mix, but plain pumpkin) will also help with the runny stools. You can give him about 1/4 cup 3 or 4 times a day. Just watch for dehydration. If he becomes tired or listless. Get him to a vet as soon as possible if this doesn't clear up. Michele :-) |

When my Daisy gets sick I also boil her some white rice and I use a lil organic low sodium chicken broth and once the stools start looking better I throw in boiled boneless chicken breast and then I slowly add her food back until she is back to normal. |
If he has been outside at all, it is possible he picked up Giardia. I would at least have his stool tested. Acute diarrhea is not normal no matter how well he is acting. The doggie flu is making rounds again this season as well. Sometimes diarrhea will be the only symptom. He is acts listless or stops eating, please see a vet right away. |
I will try the pumpkin. I hope he likes it...... Thanks for the advice regarding the rice and chicken Trust me when I say if he shows any change other than this diarrhea he will be seeing a vet. In fact, if the pumpkin and then the rice doesn't work, I will be making a call. |

The canned pumpkin I found says for ingredients pumpkin, squash. Would that be what I'm looking for? I do I need a true plain pumpkin??? |

If you don't see an improvement by tomorrow, you need to take him to your vet. Toy breed dogs can dehydrate quickly from diarrhea. Dehydration causes dangerous electrolyte imbalances that can cause heart irregularities among other things. I would give him Pedialite (by syringe if necessary) today along with the pumpkin. |
