Seizures and some foam at mouth I have not been on in a while been very busy but I hope even though its very late someone might help. I live in a rual area and our vet was called but said since this little one is doing fine to bring her in tomorrow but I just needed to see if anyone here had any answers. Here is the story. Today we recieved a call from a man in town who had found a tiny little yorkie girl who we all thought was maybe 3 months old and asked if we could foster her until the owner could be located. She was horribly dirty and covered in fleas. I bathed her and cleaned her up and then off to the vet we went to see if she had a chip in her to identify the owners. The vet looked her over and told us from her teeth that she is over a year maybe closer to 3 years old. She topped the scales at 2lbs 8 oz. Anyway we had a great day with her and our other two and put them to bed and all was well. Then about an hour ago I hear this horrible noise I run to the bathroom where we had put her little bed and she was on her side spinning very fast and foam was coming from her mouth. It didnt last long and she seems to be fine now other than maybe a little disoriented. I have two yorkies of my own and hav never experience this. My first thought was liver shunt but I wanted to ask the opinion of those here who have been around this. We are searching diligently for her owners but after this are wondering if maybe she was abandoned because she was so ill. Please if you can help me understand this I might be able to sleep a little more tonight. Thanks so much. |
Oh my God. The poor baby. She is probably supposed to be on medications and doesn't have them because she is "misplaced". The poor condition she was in surely wouldn't help matters at all. She needs to be seen by a vet immediately. I would search the net for a missing Yorkie that fits her description. Someone may have stolen her then didn't know what in the heck to do when she had a seisure. How very kind of you to take her in (I would have done the same thing). However, when a dog is found like this, you shouldn't expose them to your healthy dogs until they get a clean bill of health. I hope that doesn't sound harsh, because I honestly only mean it in a cautious way. My heart goes out to the tiny little bugger who must be scared and confused. I pray the vet will be able to diagnose her with your description of what happened and that she will become a healthy little girl. She may have health issues from being so tiny or even ones that caused her to be so tiny. Check and see if her fontenal has closed on her head. If it hasn't you will feel a "gap". You have to be very careful with these. Oh, I am worried about a thousand different things with this little one. Please let us know what you find out. I am already worried sick about her. God bless you for being so caring. |
I need to add that with her having fleas, you'll need to take a stool sample with you to the vet. She can't afford to have worms (especially being so tiny). Oh geeze, I am honestly worried:( |

Aww the poor baby. I hope you can find her owners or find out what is wrong with her. That was great you took her in and had her to the vet!! Bless you |
With one being so tiny, maybe too much stress for her :( Good luck |
i would rule out liver shunt before epilepsy since liver shunt runs in this breed more than epilepsy so make sure this is ruled out. Have a blood panel done as with alot of fleas they can get anemic as well which can be a problem in a tiny dog like this so have the blood checked. If you can fast for 12 hrs and do a pre and post bile acid test with her being so tiny i really think this is liver shunt not epilepsy :( You are an angel to care for this little girl. Keep us posted but keep in mind alot of vets are not real up on liver shunt so you need to push for testing on this asap. What are you feeding and did this seizure happen after eating? Was it a grand mal where she was thrashing or petit mal where she was stiff on side sounds like since you heard the noise it was grand mal. DO NOT LET THEM GIVE HER PHENO OR POTASSIUM BROMIDE WITHOUT TESTING FOR LIVER SHUNT :( |
you may want to post this under sick and injured thread as you will get more responses some signs for liver shunt - seizures, head pressing, spaced out after eating, seizures usually occur after eating a high protein diet so what is the protein count on the diet? Keep it at 18% if you can until you find out what is up so maybe get some natural balance vegetarian or fish and sweet potato today. Is she a picky eater as that is a sign. i hope you get some answers fast - poor little one |
Poor little baby. I hope the vet get's to the bottom of her problem so she can be saved. Bless you for taking her in. Thank heavens she was found, being on her own, full of fleas and sick she wouldn't have lasted long. Prayer's coming for her to be well again. With all those fleas on her it would be my guess she was abandoned :(or not taken care of at least. |
Being her size and age, I would say Liver Shunt. Please have a Bile Acid Test done ASAP. God Bless you for caring for her. Honestly, I would bet she was discarded because she is sick (poor baby). |
Just wanting to let you know that you are doing a great thing here...a hard thing, but a GREAT thing. Maybe the vets will do some care for free since she was abandoned. How is she today? |
I would definately have them check for LS.... When we first were having problems with Copper he kept hiding under my bed, and his mouth was soaked he hadn't thrown up but was salivating. I am sure you already know this but please make sure she is eating, and keep that nutrical on hand. If I am not mistaken I have heard that they can do the BA test with out fasting. I know I read that somewhere, I think that it is a urine Bile acid test, because she is so small and could also be anemic from the fleas I would not fast her unless you have to. bless you for taking care of this sweet baby. |
UPDATE !!! Her owners have been found Praise the Lord!! Bless her heart she does have liver shunt and had ran afte a spell with it. They are on their way to get her. Thanks everyone for the prayers for this little one. |
Great news!! I hope they can get her in better shape. |
