im worried This is Gracie's second uti, the first one was when she was a pup and before we spayed her, she is now over a year old and has another one. Im a little worried that this could result into more. Is it pretty common for this breed to get those?? What would be a good preventive vitamin for her. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks :) Kellie and :aimeeyork Gracie |
Unfortunately, female dogs are prone to UTI's because of their anatomy. The E-Coli bacteria found in the intestines can infect the urinary tract system since the vaginal area and anus are so close. You can get some pH test strips and make sure her urine is neutral. If it is too high, bacteria can grow. Adding a cranberry supplement like Cranberry Relief can help lower the pH and prevent the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Has Gracie ever had a bile acids test? All Yorkies should have one once they reach five months old to check for a liver shunt since Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with a shunt than all other breeds combined. Not to worry you, but frequent UTI's can be a symptom of a shunt so it should be ruled out. |
