Vaccine reaction
 

:confused:My yorkie received a rabies and bordatella vaccine yesterday around 11am. By 7pm I noticed that around her neck was really red and swelling in lumps all down her chest. I took her to the emergency vet and they gave her benedryl and a steroid shot. She has a mild case of MVD so the steroid shot was in an extremely low dose. The vet said there is probably some underlying problem that caused her reaction. I'm a little worried because she has been biting and scratching ALOT lately. My vet thinks it's a flea bite and shrugged me off, but I think she's just dismissing me or just doesnt care (yes - im in search of a new vet). So, I don't know if that had something to do with her reaction or not.

Today she is still just laying around, but the redness and swelling is basically gone. Do you think she's just tired from two vet visits yesterday or should I still be worried?

Has anyone else experienced a reaction like this before?

Those types of reactions just happen to some dogs. At least the steroids and Benadryl brought her out of it. :) Vaccines do tend to make them sleepy for a day or two, but she is more likely to react because of the MVD. Since a reaction has occurred, always premed with Benadryl and the rabies should be given on a different day than all other vaccines. Some vets will write a medical waiver saying that a particular dog can't have the rabies vaccine and then some won't write one for something like MVD.

Watch her gum color and make sure they are nice and pink.

I take her to Banfield...and they keep switching vets. So before her comprehensive exam yesterday I specifically told them to not give her multiple vaccines. They shrugged me off and then this happened. I am livid!

The emergency vet said what you did...to always give her the benedryl before hand..and to continue it this time for 5 days. I hope she perks up soon.

If you told them not to and they did it anyway, it is pretty much illegal and they could get in trouble for doing so.

It is likely that she would have had a reaction either way though. The rabies is just so strong for small dogs and it is very sad that dogs with liver disease still have to have it. :(

I personally avoid Banfield. I have heard many stories about them. Just google Banfield complaints and take a look at the MANY complaints against them.
It is good to find one vet you trust and stick with them!

I'm so sorry your Hannah had this happen to her. I hope she's doing better. That vet should have listened to your request. Anytime you take your pet in it's your decision as to what treatment you will allow and what you won't. I would have been livid. Especially since Hannah has a pre -existing medical problem. She has to be extra careful as to the vaccines she receives. All vaccine datasheets clearly state that vaccines are to be only administered to healthy pets.

What happened to Hannah was clearly a vaccine reaction. The bordatella was more likely than not, unnecessary. Dr Schultz doesn't even recommend this in a healthy dog, let alone a sick dog. The vet also never should have administered two vaccines at once. The rabies vaccine has the greatest potential for adverse reactions, giving two vaccines at once greatly increased her health and welfare. Once your pet has a reaction to a vaccine every time another one is given the risk for a more severe reaction is increased. This is from Dr Dodds....


Report any reactions you believe might be linked to any shot to your vet immediately. Make sure it goes in your dog's file and get a copy. You may someday need to apply for a vaccination exemption.

If your dog vomits, has the runs repeatedly, itches all over, can't breathe, her face swells or legs swell up or if she collapse go to the vet asap. Your vet will probably administer a steroid shot that may save her life but may also give her lifelong steroid related immune problems.

MLV adverse reactions ( parvo, distemper, adenovirus-2) generally happen within 10 days to 45 days and may include, among other problems, stiff achy joints, nervous system disorders, elevated liver enzymes, liver or kidney failure and autoimmune problems. Killed vaccines (rabies, kennel cough, lepto) have to be repeated more often and also have added adjuvants to illicit an immune response. The adverse reactions tend to show up sooner. Dr.Dodds says generally happen immediately or within two days and can include, seizures, lameness, allergies, arthritis, and even anaphylactic shock.

You can see from Dr Dodds quote that Hannah's itching is most likely from the vaccines. This angers me to no end, these vets are giving out vaccines as if they are harmless when in fact they need to be given with the utmost care and consideration as to if they are even necessary.There are studies already done concerning boosters. Most researchers do not endorse them and feel they do more harm than good........This is from Dr Schultz...

Ronald Schultz provides an analogy with human measles vaccination, noting we don’t regularly revaccinate people. Schultz notes “the immune system of a person is similar to that of an animal, and since immunity persists for the life of a person (average 70+ years), then why wouldn’t immunity from canine or feline vaccines persist for 10 to 15 years? The answer is that many canine and feline vaccines do provide the same lifelong immunity”.

the morning that i adopted my maddie she was givin her rabies shot at a vets office in the town i got her at. by that evening her muzzle was red and puffy and she to had red spots on her tummy and just didnt seem to feel very good. I took her to my vet and she said she was having a reaction to the shot. a few hours after recieving the steriod shot maddie was feeling better and swelling and spots gone. my vet said she will need a small does of steriod everytime she recieves the rabies. you definatley need a vet that will listen to you and your concerns. im very lucky to have a vet that treats my pets as if they were her own, and never dismiss's my concerns. chester has never had a reaction, but my vet will not give rabies with most of the vaccines, dogs are too little for this

Thank you for the site suggestions! She has been itch free and happy since Monday afternoon! The vet had planned on giving her a corona shot too and I had asked the receptionist before hand why she was getting it b/c i had read that only puppies up to 8 weeks old needed that one. Then that vaccine magically disappeared from the list of what she was supposed to get that day. Does anyone else know if they need that one?
I'm super scared for her to have any more vaccines and am trying to find a vet who owns his or her own clinic and with some knowledge in liver disease.

Does anyone live around the Nashville area that knows of one? I know UT is great, but that's 3 hrs from here. :(

You where correct.......The corona vaccine was totally unnecessary...........good for you.....:)....You have to be on top of this for Hannah. Vets tend to be of the mind set that all vaccines are good and the more the better......sad.....

Definetly a reaction to rabies...but I avoid BAnifield...have heard many ucky things about them!!
