has anyone heard of portosystemic shunt and AAI? my 3lb baby is so sick.. they think she has this shunt problem and might need surgery.. she isnt even a year old yet! if not the shunt they think maybe menengitis spelled wrong i am sure..i am so upset and sick that my baby has to go through all this.. |
Yes, we are very familiar with shunts on YT. Do you have any questions in particular? What testing has been done so far? |
Unfortunately liver shunts are all too common on Yorkie Talk. In fact, Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with a liver shunt than all other breeds combined. Has she had a bile acids test? Here is a great link from the University of Tennessee about liver shunts: Portosystemic Shunts FAQ |
i am waiting for the test to come back.. they sent it out this morning.. she is so sick.. scared and shaking all the time. when you pick her up she screams and loss of bladder. i am just sick with worry. how much does the surgery usually run for this? i will do about anything to save her. she is so tiny and so young. its just not fair that she has to go through all this. |
When did the symptoms start? What is she eating? |

Praying for you. |
she was eating wellness from the vet. and then she likes alpo soft food in the evening. i wouldnt give her much of that. her symptoms started about a week ago and got worse and worse. she doesnt know where her legs are. its awful. |

she is at the vet now. she isnt stable enough to be at home. she doesnt know how to stand up and she screams when you pick her up. she is scared and shaking and i am scared and if the test comes back neg i am not sure what to do |

I'm so sorry your lil girl is going through this.... If the bile tests come back that her levels are high, it may well be treatable with proper diet or surgery......they will make her better. |
Are you near a vet school? That would be your best resource. Poor sweet baby. What is her name? |
her name is roriee. she has been with me since the day she was born since her mom had her in the other room :) she was the runt and i love her like i have never loved a puppy before. she has been at the vet's now for 2 days and i am lost without her here with me. she has such a huge personality and the house is now so empty. |

has your dog had head pressing, seizures, vomitting and spaced out after eating and picky eater as these are all signs of liver shunt? Screaming with pain when picking up does not sound like liver shunt to me as have not really heard that to be an issue. I am thinking this may be something else and if they rule this out maybe a neurologist is next up or internal medicine as I know the pancreas is very painful as well when picking up but not the liver - hopefully they will be able to narrow some things down for you so sorry |
encephalitis sounds more like it :( Veterinary Teaching Hospital :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine here is some info to read over as this sounds more like what is going on than liver shunt as liver shunt is not so painful they are screaming out but this disease can be :( |
