What to expect for spay on tiny Yorkie Hi Everyone - Rio is scheduled for spay/baby teeth pull next Tuesday and I'm wondering if you all could tell me what to expect. She is only 2.8 lbs, so my vet said although most dogs aren't supposed to eat after 9pm the night before, Rio will be able to have a small meal at 7am that morning and I would have to bring her to the vet at 9am. Vet said that way she won't be hypoglycemic. Is that what most of you tiny owners experienced too? How did your little ones do after spay surgery? Was recovery pretty quick? Were you able to find a cone that fit your tiny one well? I ordered a Softee Cone collar that fits Rio well. I just hope she'll accept wearing it when she really has to wear it. Did you feed them anything special to accomidate teeth being pulled? I'm so nervous because she's only 2.8lbs, although she is 8 months old. Thanks for your advice in advance! :animal36 |
Mija was 10 months and barely 2lbs when I got her spayed and had her teeth pulled. My vet had also let her eat early in the morning so she would not be hypoglycemic. The surgery went perfectly with no complications. The first day back home she slept most of the day and she was pretty quiet. But the next day she was back to normal. She kept wanting to play and she had more energy than before! We didn't even need to get a cone. She never even tried to do anything to her stitches. As for her teeth, I had gotten her some canned food but she didn't even touch it. She ate her normal food like if nothing had happened! I was really nervous to get her spayed, but my vet reassured me alot before the procedure and i'm really glad I had it done.....Hope I helped :) |
Hi! I had my Nikki spayed at 7 months and she was only 3 pounds. I didn't feed her that morning but it makes sense to keep her blood sugar up. Nikki bounced right back. We didn't need a cone as she didn't lick her stiches. Good luck! I took my Nikki to a vet that spayed my friends tiny dog. I heard stories...... Anyway I am sure all will be fine!;) |
Layla was that exact weight when she was spayed. She did really well. She has a hard time coming out of anesthesia so it took her about 3 days until she was back to normal. You might want to get an infant onesie for her to wear at night so she doesnt' have to wear the cone at night. Layla needed help to potty- i had to hold her up- poor thing- was so out of it. She had her teeth pulled in a different surgery as it wasn't an issue when she was spayed- she ate hard kibble the same day- wasn't even phased by the teeth- but again had a hard time with the anesthesia. |
Nala was 4 pounds when she was spayed and we were told not to feed her after midnight. If you're worried about feeding her so close to surgery and hypoglycemia, you could give her some nutri-cal instead of food. We got a few onesies and a blow up collar. We only needed the onesies and never even needed the cone. The night we got back she was very out of it and calm...at bedtime however, she was back to her old self!! The next few days we gave her pain meds w/ sedatives in it so she wouldn't be too bouncy and tear her stitches. Good luck:) I called my vet twice during the day and my husband also called once to check up on her:luvu: |
