Localized Mange/hair loss around eyes My Princess Lulu has localized mange around her eyes, I have taken her to the vet and a scrape was done but the vet said there were no "mites", she gave me a goodwinol to put around her eyes but it's difficult to spread as she moves alot and won't stay still and I have to be careful not to let go into her eyes! I have changed her food...again. She constantly is itching now all over but she mainly has lost alot of hair around the eyes. I don't know what else to do to make her feel more comfortable. Any advice on food or maybe shampoo? I had her on Natural Balance Duck and Potato and now I placed her on Natures Variety Prarie New Zealand Venison meal. |

Try using a dose of Revolution heartworm topical, two months in a row and 3 weeks apart. It acts as a miticide also, and does other stuff. Mites don't always show on a scraping. If she's little, you may be able to get two doses from one application pkg. If she doesn't show improvement in 24-48 hours, I would then suspect food allergies, and eliminate foods containing beef and grains first. |
Also I can't remember witch one but frontline or advantage also works for mites. Are you sure it's not yeast? Yeast will also cause severe itching and hair loss around the eyes. The balding areas will often look red and swollen as with mange. Have you smelled it? It will smell yeasty if it's yeast. |

I'm not sure if Tea Tree oil kills yeast. I do know that Olive Leaf Extract does kill yeast. I would use it as a rinse after bathing. It's ok if she gets it in her mouth but not sure about the eyes. I would use a wash cloth on the head and face and a Q-Tip for around the eye area. Also Chamomile Tea is wonderfull for relieving itchy skin. It will probably not help if it's mites. It does help for yeast. |
Are you sure of the smell? Do you know what yeasty skin smells like? Clean the inside of her ears with a Q-Tip and if you get white stuff out then it's yeast. It will be creamy white not yellowish like wax. And if it's yeast then the ears will smell the strongest of yeast. You would be surprised how many vets can't diagnose yeast. |
HyLyt makes a shampoo and creme rinse which is hypoallergenic with essential fatty acids and emulsifiers which may offer her some relief with the itching. As for the diet you might also consider eliminating chicken in the event that it is a protein allergy. I hope that she can get some relief soon. |
