Eye Infection? Maybe... Hi Guys, I haven't posted in so long, but when I thought my Bella could be sick, I thought of you guys to get a general opinion. So, like many Yorkies, mine (who is about 1.5-years-old) gets that black, gooey-yucky stuff in the corner of her eyes. The other day, my husband thought it looked irritated in the corner of one of her eyes (not actually her eyeball, but more on the skin). I looked at it, and while it was red, I didn't think it looked that bad. Well, tonight we got home from the grocery store and noticed that it looked a bit more red and was kinda bleeding (looked more raw than anything else). I'm going to try to bring her to the doctor tomorrow to get it looked at, b/c I don't want it to get infected...or more infected if it already is. Has this happened to any of your guys' pups before? I appreciate any advice or thoughts! Thanks!! |
I keep Antibiotic eye ointment on hand at all times. When any eyes show mucous or redness on the upper or lower lids I apply it 2x daily for 5 days. If at any time it looks worst, say after 2-3 applications, I take them to the vet. Nomally this clears up any problems. Also, I've heard the brown gook can come from too much protein in the diet. Ask your vet about that if you go. And you shouldn't use anything in or around the eye that is not made specifically for treating the eye. Other meds/ointments may be too strong and cause more harm. And never use Visine or any people products except like Natural Tears or similar, non medicated products. |
Apple cider vineger in the drinking water helps with the gookies. And if the gookies sit on the skin too long it will grow bacteria. Keeping the area clean will prevent the bacteria from growing. The bacteria can get into the eye from the skin also. |
Thanks for your posts guys! I really appreciate the advice! :) Apple cider vinegar you say...interesting... I ended up having my mom take Bella to the vet (since I was at work) on Monday, and it turns out she had an eye infection in one eye and it was looking like it was appearing in the other eye. So, they gave me some eye drops for her. Poor thing... |
Great! Glad to here she is on the road to recovery! |
