Cujo returned from luxating patella surgery today. Folks, I feel absolutely awful. The little guy has to be confined for 2 weeks, and then another 6 after that with limited mobility. Cujo isnt fully crate trained (he loves his crate at night and when we're not around) and its horrible hearing him whimper all day. When I try and take the bugger out he wants to sprint around like a madman. The cone, the cast...makes me feel like crap. Any ideas on how to keep him calm? Also the little guy doesn't seem to want to pee at all but hes eating and drinking fine. The other thing is, will he lose his spirit after being confined for 2 months? I think I fear that the most. I dont want my dog to be a quiet, shy little guy and I don't want him to hate me for doing this. Here's a pic of the little guy. It's depressing. I'm so sorry for you and Cujo!! My Buster is going to need the surgery for his luxating patella soon. I am dreading it. He loves to go for his walk every day, and that little guy can do some serious walking! I work and won't be able to stay home with him. In January my spouse will retire and he will be home so maybe I can put it off until then. Post again with an update on how he's doing. If you find anything that seems to help him, please pass it along. Buster isn't a crate puppy either. He wants to follow me all over the house and that won't be possible when he has the surgery. I don't know what I'm going to do. I love him so much and can't stand to see him unhappy. |

I know it is hard but please listen to your surgeon's instructions. It will more than worth it after all said and done! :) Click on the link in my signature and take a look at what I offer. I think it is a much better alternative than those awful plastic "thingys!" Hugs to you and Cujo! It will get better. Hugs |
So sorry for little Cujo but so happy is healing and recovering! I just went throught this with my Moose 2 weeks ago and got so many great tips and good advice for getting through this from other Yorkie Talkers. In the "sick and injured" forum go to the thread titled "Moose's LP Surgery is Tommorow" and read through those posts. It's 7 pages worth of what to look for and expect and it will definitely help get you and Cujo through this- don't worry he'll be all better soon!! |
Thanks everyone for the kind words, I'm definitley gonna go read the thread on Moose later on. As for Cujo, he doesnt seem to want to pee or poop. He peed at 5 am (it was like a lake haha) and hasnt pooped since yesterday but is eating just fine. ? |

just a little update. the little bugger is fine today. peeing more regularly but still no poop. he thinks hes ok and wants to sprint off furniture and around the house but he cant so hes still pretty sad. the little guy hasnt eaten since 8 am except for a few table scraps here and there...has me worried i dunno wut to do. |
How is Canook doing? If he is still not wanting to eat, can you bribe him with some boiled chicken and rice? This won't upset his tummy and I am sure that he'll like it. Has he been able to poop yet? Hot Rod finally started eating around the 4th day after his lp surgery. It's been 7 mos and he still hobbles every once in a while--but now it's because his muscles need to be built back up. Let us know how Canook is feeling. Hugs. |
Hey, Yea Cujo is eating and going to the washroom just fine. Only thing cheesing me off now is when i have him laying my lap he tries to get up and starts putting pressure on his rear legs so I basically have to keep him on his back. I'm sure a little pressure won't ruin the repair, correct? |

Correct. He can move a little. The surgeon told us that the motion you want to avoid is him pushing up on his knees. I don't mean normal walking around but like walking up stairs, jumping at you; climbing things. You don't want him hopping type of movements. Our surgeon (each one is different) said that we needed to confine him to a 3 x 3 area at the most. I wound up putting his harness on him and latching a neck lanyard around my wrist to him. This way I was able to control his movements by how much the lanyard was wrapped around my wrist. It is hard. Worst case, you may have to put him into a crate--for his own safety. I know it is hard but oh so worth it in the end. Good luck and be strong. :) |
