Sick Puppy Advice I just got my Yorkie puppy, Ava, on Sat from what I thought was a good breeder. I called around, asked all the right questions and picked the person that I thought would give me a healthy dog. Ava has not wanted to eat since I brought her home, so I am giving her Nutrical and trying everything to make her eat a bit. I was told it was likely due to her change of home. On Monday, I took her to the vet for her checkup. I brought a stool sample and the vet just told me that she has giardia AND cocidia! She is now on 2 meds and I have been told that if she does not start eating soon, my force feeding will not be enough and we will have to admit her. In the meantime I need to bring her back for a blood gloucose test. Needless to say I am upset and very very worried. My priority is to get my puppy heathly and I will work with the vet to do that. Next, I need to know what I should expect from the breeder. I am now having to take time of work and this is already getting costly. Stool samples at my vet are $100 (I will need to do this at least twice). The Meds are $75. Blood work $30. I paid $2000 for what I thought was a heathy dog. Any advice? |
Have you called the breeder? If yes what did they say? What does your contract say? |
I would contact the breeder and get a copy of the vet records and send them to her she " should" help with the vet bills... Also try a little boiled chicken and rice to see if she will eat that. Boiled chicken always worked for my puppy!! |
I did call the breeder. SHe was nice about it... was shocked, etc. But I am worried that she may not be a good breeder and this could be the start of an unhealthy dog . My contract says I can get a refund, but I love my puppy so much I can't imagine giving her back. I am so upset right now ;( |
I hope she gets well soon... these lil guys and gals cost money... I'm from brooklyn ny and I;m looking to get another yorkie... just curious to know where you got your furbaby from? |
I got her from Sheri Clark in CT. |

Both coccidia and gardia can be treated so you shouldn't have to give your puppy back but this breeder if she is reputable should pay the bills. Did she take them to her vet for a final checkup before you got her. How old was your baby? and why did you think this breeder was reputable? |

I'm sure you have a contract. I would continue to make contact and keep her informed. She is under a strict YTCA code of conduct and ethics. |
Sheri just did call me and she is also very worried and sorry. So she is being good about it. I am on my way to the vet again now with Ava they want to check her blood. I just want her to get better. |
Oh and thanks to everyone so far for all the advice. It is appeciated and comforting. |
I have met a couple of people in Ma who have purchase puppies from her and all have said wonderful things about her!!! Im sure she will help you with the vetting and I know how you feel after one night I was in love with my puppy and could have NEVER given her back... |

I do really like Sheri as well and also read about the very good reviews about her dogs. We went to her place twice and the dogs all looked SO happy. When we left her house we both said that if we were dogs, that's were we would want to be. And as stated she is being very supportive, so it is not my intention to say anything negative about her. I think I may have just over reacted and posted on here because I know everyone on here loves their Yorkies as much as I love mine (already!) and I just wanted to hear what you had to say. After reading more about what she has I am feeling better. I just need her to eat again. Once again thanks to all for caring. |
