I feel helpless. Ever since my baby boy arrived Friday it has been a whirlwind, he arrived with what turned out to be kennel cough but he was still running around, eating like a champ and acting perfectly normal, until tonight. He ate perfectly fine at 10amish this morning, when I went to feed him again in the afternoon he wanted nothing to do with the food or water, I got slightly worried but I figured he was just more interested in napping at the moment because we had a serious play session previously, but he never went back to eat his food. He coughed up a whitish foam, twice and hasn't been his energetic playful self, and now more than 12 hours since he last ate or drank - he wants nothing to do with food. I called my vet, he said it may be because of some irritation with the kennel cough, to give him some maylox(sp?), and try and get him to eat but that didn't work. He is going to the vet tomorrow but I am just so worried about him. I'm cheating on his crate training to let him sleep in the bed with me tonight so I can keep a better eye on him. Has anyone ever seen anything like this, or had a similar experience? I dont know if this is the next step of kennel cough, or what because I've never experienced kennel cough. |
The day after we got our Jax he wouldn't eat and he was puking white foam too. We immediately brought him to vet and they gave him shots to get his sugar levels back up and did some blood work. His white blood cell count was high but he wasn't showing signs of anything until about a week later he started coughing and they diagnosed him with bronchitis. Try some chicken baby food with boiled rice. That was the only thing we could get Jax to eat for about a week after his incident. Also try giving a little bit of Karo syrup to keep him his blood sugar levels from dropping too low. And of course make sure he gets to the vet tomorrow! |

I'm not sure why you suspect kennel cough....Has the vet given this diagnosis?......I am very concerned that your pup has been without food and water for over 12 hours though. This is very serious....A pup going this long can have hypoglycemia. You really need to give him some form of sugar, whether it be Karo syrup, honey if he's listless, shivering, pale gums, can't stand, uncoordinated, etc. etc ...... Always have corn syrup available or maple syrup that can be absorbed quickly into the dogs bloodstream. Give one teaspoon of syrup to a small dog..... The effect of syrup does not last long, but it works quickly to reverse a low blood sugar situation. If your pet is unconscious rub the syrup on the gums and under the tongue and get him to the emergency vet ASAP for treatment or he could die. I don't mean to scare you but this can be serious..... A pup should be eating every 3 hours or so......even if you have to hand feed some simmered chicken.....The foam could be from having an empty stomach, if it's bile........ |

Do you have any Nutri-cal? It's a suplement to prevent and help with hypoglycemia, my breeder recomended it for a few weeks. I think it would help if he's not eating. Don't worry about the crate right now!!! Puppy needs your love and attention I always use a soft crate during the night and put it on my bed. That way I can know when puppy is up or needs to go potty, but don't worry about rolling on her. Please let us know how it goes... What did you name him? |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Sorry I don't have any experience with this so I can't offer any insight but what I can do is keep your little guy in my prayers. I hope he feels better soon. Take care and please keep us posted. |

You may want to set your alarm for three hours after you go to bed so you can try and feed him and give some more Nurti-cal just to be safe. I'll be praying for you and Bentley! PS welcome to YT Bentley your mamma is taking really good care of you!!! |
You may need to give him some more nutrical or maybe as jp4m2 suggest, boil up some chicken and feed it to him. You need to get him to eat and drink. puppies need to eat at least 4 times a day or depending on age, free feed. How old is your little one? |

I am definitely going to do that, but I'm sure I'll be up anyways worrying about him. Quote:

I don't have any advice to give that hasn't already been said but I wanted to send prayers out for your little one. |
I was just checking in to see how Bentley is doing.....I typed my previous post at 1 a.m. so forgive me if it was harsh. I was just so concerned about him having not ate for so long.....When they start to go down it can happen so fast.......I was just so concerned for him.... The Nutri-Cal is just a bandage, so to speak, to get the dropping glucose level up fast but he really needs to eat something. When my Jack was a pup I couldn't get him to eat unless I handed every little piece of chicken to him. I hope you get some help at the vets today so Bentley feels better soon. :) |
