Spay questions Hello everyone, I just had my puppy Stella spayed on Monday (it is now Wednesday). They kept her overnight and I brought her home Tuesday and she seemed uncomfortable but ok. She ate on Tuesday night but today (Wed) she refuses to eat or drink. She will take treats from me but will not take her food even if I try to hand feed her. Is this normal? I do not want her to become dehydrated from no water. She is just laying around and is very listless. My other question is that the vet did not give me antibiotics or pain meds. I know that some vets do not use antibiotics but I am nervous that it would be better to give them to her to prevent infection. has anyone had their dog spayed and did not use antibiotics or pain meds. I am sure they will give them to me if I call but I do not want to overreact. Thanks for the advice!! I am very nervous!! |
My Jewels was completely back to normal the day after the spay. I would call the vet. The listlessness and not eating are concerning and shouldnt be going on this long after the spay. My vet didnt give me antibiotics but he did give pain meds |
Call the vets...this is not normal. Mine never got antibiotics but they got pain meds for a 3 days. |
sorry to hear that; just to get her to eat something you can give her gerber baby food; also she will get hydrated from it; you can try the banana; chicken apple dinner and mix them together. or some boiled chicken and rice. if u get the pain meds make sure she eats something; it shouldn't be given on empty stomach; as NSAIDs can cause stomach problems if given on empty stomach. good luck |
She needs to be seen by your vet. Have you taken her temperature? |
thank you guys for the reply. I called the vet who recommended I take her e-collar off while she ate and to mix her food with something to entice her. Stella ate a few bites (about 1/3) of her food after I did this so it makes me feel better. Since her pain meds probably wore off today the vet said to expect some lethargy/discomfort. oh, and she had a few sips of water after i took her on a short walk outside. Thanks again! I feel a bit better. Perhaps she will eat more tonight. I hate seeing her like this but perhaps tomorrow will be better. I am surprised she did not bounce back quicker but I am just happy she ate and drank some. |
It is normal to not give antibiotics. Some vets don't give pain meds, but that doesn't mean it's the right decision. She had a hysterectomy and I would absolutely be demanding them. |
btw: I will be headed to the store to get some baby food now so thanks for the advice. Perhaps that will entice her to eat more. I have not taken her temp but not sure how to do that. I would have to take her back to the vet. Perhaps tomorrow if she is still not better. Luckily, they are 24/7 in case something comes up tonight. |

if u are thinking on switching her food in the long run, i suggest the honest kitchen ; it's dehydrate raw food; u add water to it; which is great to make sure she gets enough water. it's easy to make and it's human grade food www.thehonestkitchen.com you can get a digital thermometer with the covers and put some baby oil or ky jelly on it and place it in her rectum; wait until it beeps and record the temperature. good luck |
Just wanted to say the baby food was a hit. I mixed some of it with her regular food and she left most of the dry food but ate almost all of the baby food. She has always been extremely picky with her food. She will eat it for about 2 weeks and then suddenly refuse to touch it. I thought I finally found one she would eat but maybe not. I will have to try the honest kitchen. thanks for the recommend. I will check it out. |
