Is my little girl in her first heat ???? My little girl will be 1 year old on October 15,2009 She has started to spot little drops of blood where she sleeps and her private area is very swollen and has been for about 6 days now. Is this her being in heat or do you think there is another problem, I am a first time Toy Yorkie owner and she is the angel of my life. What should I do or what can I do the make sure she is very comfortable during this time...I am also extremely afraid to have her fixed because I have heard of nitemear stories about putting these little guys under during the operation. Please let me know whats best for her... She is very small....3 pounds and 11 months old. Thank you in advance for any information you can send me.Timothy |
Yes she is. Mine is too! She is so sleepy and cuddly it's funny. But, the week before heat--she was CRABBY. You can snuggle her and maybe give her a little extra for treats. You can buy puppy diapers or cut holes in newborn diapers if you want to keep everything blood-free. enjoy and keep her away from all of the boys! About spaying her--it's safe--just read the forums there is good stuff in there! What anesthesia to use and also what to avoid. |
yes she is in heat. Mine had her first heat at nine months. |
Thank you very much, I feel much better now. Timothy |
She's definitely in heat. It will go away in approximately 21 days from start. Addie is my first yorkie, and I was very worried about putting her under for her spay as well, but I knew that this would be best for her since I had no plans to breed her. I talked to my vet and she went through the procedure with me and eased my mind. Addie is bigger than your yorkie, she's around 5 pounds now and was 4 pounds when she was spayed. She was one yr. at the time. She did go through one heat cycle before the spay. She was extra cuddly, like she didn't want to be left alone and she seemed uncomfortable. |
Is it normal for her private area to be extremely swollen ??? Is there anything I can do to help that problem ??? |
Addie was also very swollen - looked like 2-3 times normal size. Her vet said this is normal and she didn't give me anything to "fix" it. I think that's why Addie acted a little uncomfortable. It was her first (and only) time and she wasn't sure what was going on. The swelling stayed for quite some time and didn't fully go down until after her spay. She went into heat in February 2009 and was spayed in April 2009. The swelling went down by May 2009. She wasn't as swollen after the 21 days of her heat cycle, but it didn't seem to go back to normal until after the spay. I don't know if this is normal or not, when I brought her to the vet in April for her spay, they at first thought she was in heat, but after examining her, determined she wasn't and they were able to go ahead with the spay. Her vet says you can spay while they are in heat, but she prefers not to because it's more complicated and to do it properly she wanted to wait. I had to make three spay appointments for Addie. The first was cancelled because she had a hypoglycemic episode and we wanted to make sure she didn't have a liver shunt (no, thank goodness), the second was cancelled because she went into heat, and the third time was the charm. The spay went okay, but she seemed to be in some pain for the next couple of days even with the pain meds. Her vet said to bring her in if it didn't go away, but by the second day she was okay. I felt so bad, but she was so uncomfortable during her heat cycle that I felt it was better for her. |
