Walking sideways My almost 2 yr old male yorkie all the sudden started walking sideways. Almost like his back end is trying to get ahead of his front end. We took him to the vet and the vet was pretty much stumped because this is his only symptom. I don't know what to do. He is acting completely normal besides this. The vet sent us home with some anti yerk and said to see what happens. I want to take him to another vet but the reason I took him there was because they did his knee surgery. So I thought they would know him best. He is going back to the vet on Monday I'm not sure if we are going back there or to another vet. does anyone have any ideas about this? anyone experience this before? |
Could his blood sugar have been low or does he do it all the time? Has he been tested for liver shunt? How much does he weigh? |
the sideways walking has been consitant for 5 days, he is 4 pounds and i don't know about the liver shunt test. would they do that test when the do surgery? When the vet sent me home with no answer I got on the internet and and I thought maybe liver shunt, so I changed his food to a low protein food and have been watching for other signs. could a liver shunt not show symptons until almost 2 yrs old. I'm positive its not low blood sugar we have dealt with that before and he is eating and very active he just walks sideways. |
Bile Acid Test. Ask your vet. Good luck and keep us updated.. |
Does he have any other symptoms? Does he appear confused or disoriented at all? Usually a shunt will show up by a year of age but not always. I would have him tested to be sure.... |
Unusual gait can be signs of a neurological problem, from a fall, a bump on the head, toxins, brain tumor, swelling in the head, etc. You may want to get an xray of his head and spine before doing a BAT just to rule out spinal injury. |
he has no other symptoms, he is his normal self, just the sideways walking thing. He was fine and sleeping on the couch he jumped down with no yipe or whine and just started walking sideways. The vet did a pretty extensive physical exam and he doesn't think there is a spinal injury, he could find no signs of pain or discomfort. I think I will have the BAT test done first to rule that out. It is all just very strange. |
Can we re-visit this? Our Yorkie has done this since he could walk basically. He always walks sideways. My husband thinks it's funny, and It thought it was normal, but I thought it was a weird to see a post about it. This isn't normal? Should we mention something to the vet? He is a normal puppy at 3 months... I think? Not we've ever owned a Yorkie before. He whines, and cries, but that's usual for a puppy right. Attention, always wanting attention! and he gets 2 big walks a day!! Love the little guy, but what a suck LOL The walking sideways is just funny... but maybe not so funny? |
