Apple did a "skip" this morning
 

I guess I was so upset, I posted this on someone elses' thread, so I'm reposting here...thanks....

Today is the first day that I have ever seen Apple do a "skip" on her back left leg...Of course, I'm extremely upset, but I also know I need to find out what's going on w/that, and find the very best ortho, in the area, to help me do so...I'm sure I'll have my own vet look at her, and, possibly do x-rays, but I have more trust in my YT friends in guiding me to the right surgeon, if this becomes necessary...I live between Houston and Galveston, so I'm sure someone can tell me what they know about surgeons in the Houston/Galveston area...Thanks so much, and, of course, for you praying mamas, pray for my little Apple that this isn't serious, and we can overcome it for a long, healthy and pain free life....

I don't think just because they do one little skip necessarily means anything.
Sometimes dogs just do this, either because of stepping on something, or just
for no reason. I think it's good of you to check it out, for sure, but no need to
panic! :thumbup: I'm sure Apple will be fine. :) I wouldn't go thinking the worst
right away and looking into surgeons. Most dogs diagnosed with LP can live
perfectly normal w/o any surgery, just some supplements to make their joints stronger.

Hi, to tell you not to worry is probably a waste of breath, but don't worry! Skipping may not necessarily mean lp. And lp does not always mean surgery. There are treatments and supplements that can be given to help strengthen these little ones legs. :) Physical therapy may be an option. The first thing to do is to make sure you feel confident in your vet's diagnosis. If you have any hesitation, seek a 2nd opinion. Don't think that the vet's words are written in stone. There are also different types of surgeries for lp. Mine was that Hot Rods knee cap had to be deepened and the ligament had to be moved. His little leg was bowed outward. And after 7 mos, he still hops on that leg. But now it is because he has little muscle tone in it. We will be doing water therapy as soon as we fill up the hot tub again. The vet said to get him to try and stand up on that leg to strengthen the muscle so there may be some other reasons that little Apple is doing what she is.

Feel free to pm with any questions. My first thing to do would be to ask the vet to explain the xrays and make sure that you understand him/her. Then seek another opinion. It certainly cannot hurt to talk to an ortho vet since that who will be doing the surgery. Ask them how many they have done. and make sure they explain what they will be doing and why. Some others on here had pins put in, Hot Rod didn't need that.

I can say that I am very glad we went thru it, now. It was an extremely stressful time and yes, I was second guessing, but only for about a minute because I was very fortunate that I had/have really great vets.

Send LadyJane a PM and ask her. She lives in Houston and we have had many of the YHR rescues go to a very good ortho in your area. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the vet she has used numerous times in the past. :( I'm POSITIVE she will guide you in the right direction! :)
