PLEASE HELP - my dog is now afraid to jump. Hi everyone. I am sorry if this has been discussed, I tried to search for similar topics, but couldn't find anything. My dog, Joey, is 5 yrs old, and he was always quite a jumper. I never ever had any health problems with him. One of his favourite spots in the apt is the top of the sofa, where he likes to lie down. And today he's been acting really weird. I wasn't home in the morning and when I came back I noticed that instead of running up to me he was just standing on the floor next to that sofa. And then I put him back on it (not on the top though), and started moving around the apartment doing my own things, but instead of following me, he was just lying there. Long story short, I inspected him and he seems to be fine, when he is on the floor he seems to be running around as usual (maybe a bit slower, as if he has less energy) but when i put him on the bed and put a piece of cheese (his favoutite treat) down on the floor, he just started shaking. For the past 20 minutes he's has been sitting there staring at the treat. I don't have a chance to go to my vet because it is Sunday and he is not there today, and I am assuming that Joey might've fallen off the sofa while I wasn't there. Has anything similar happened to any of you? Please help, I am just freaking out here, because as I said, I never had any problems with him :( I am sorry if I am all over the place with my story, it is just that I am very nervous for him. |
P.S. And he is not limping and when I tried to bend his paws he didn't cry. |
Sorry to hear Joey is acting different. Since he isn't limping, doesn't appear to be sore when you touch him maybe he was just shook up from falling. I would keep a close eye on him and take him to the vet if he continues to seem afraid. |
I am glad he doesnt appear to be hurt..but i wish my two were afraid to jump. I worry they they will hurt their legs. Bella already has a low grade LP. I hope he gets over the fear!! |
I, too, am sorry for Joey's fear; but, you may have found this a blessing in disguise, since he does not appear harmed. It's really not a good idea for our little ones to jump. Period. Some find it impossible to keep them down, since they think they're invincible. But, little legs can break so easily. Though it's hard to see him not enjoying this "athletics" ;), I, personally, would take advantage of this time, and DIScourage his jumping from the sofa back. |
My first thought was a back problem. Will Joey go up or down steps? My vet told me that's the first sign that it's back related. The shaking could be that he is in pain. I hope it turns out to be nothing, but I can see why you are concerned. Best wishes! |
I had the same thought about back pain. It sounds like it to me. Hope hes better tomorrow. |
UPDATE: He woke up completely fine this morning, jumping and running around as usual. I guess he was just mentally traumatazed from falling. Thank you for your help, ladies, I really appreciate it :) I, too, would prefer for him not to jump at all :), and I will definitely keep a much closer look on his sofa jumping (and will try to stop him from doing it, since it is a very recent habit). Again, thank you :) |
Please look into buying him some pet steps or a ramp. Walmart, Walgreens and Petsmart usually carry inexpensive ones that work well for the sofa. |
