Luxating Patella I took Gunner back to the vet this week because he started limping again after hurting his leg a few months ago. He would just yelp for no reason. Come to find out it wasn't the same injury but he has luxating patella. How common is this in yorkies? Poor thing is on medication for a week and hoping and praying he grows out of it. Karen |
Hello - My yorkie had luxating patella in both his back legs. Apparently, this is a common condition of yorkshire terriers. Last year he ended up tearing his cruciate ligament (similar to an ACL tear in humans) and we had to have surgery. While having surgery for the cruciate the surgeon fixed the luxating patella issue as well. I think she hollowed out the knee cap a bit so that the bone falls into place as opposed to popping out of socket. Recovery wasn't bad. I couldn't let him jumpfor a couple months but now he is doing great. He is now a little over 5 years old. What did the vet recommend? |
We went thru lp surgery. While it was not fun, I would say that I am glad we did it because Hot Rod is doing very well. He's still recovering after 7 mos but he's doing great. It would really depend on the severity of the lp. There are other treatments such as supplements or therapy. I would seek a second opinion. Then I would recommend speaking with an ortho vet-one who has much experience with lp surgeries. Then I would try and decide on the next course of treatment. How old is your baby? Hot Rod was 1 1/2 years old when he had surgery. |

LP Thanks for all the replies! My Gunner is almost 1 year old and the Vet just advised we wait and see if it gets worst. She said sometimes they can grow out of it. She said she hates to do surgery because with any surgery it brings on arthritis which is a problem too. My little guy had surgery this morning getting neutered or his mind changed as my Dad use to call it! He is doing well and gets to come home in the morning. I wonder if that will help him stop marking?? I sure hope so. IT seems we haven't gotten very far in housebreaking. As for the LP our Vet gave us Metacam for the pain. Anyone use this? Thanks for all the help. Karen |

I had a yorkie who lived to be around 16 (he was a rescue and we were never certain of his age, but I had him for 10 years). He had LP all of that time and never needed surgery. He was on Metacam at times if it acted up, but it would improve and he would be fine for long periods. I have seen a couple of people here say they have had problems with Metacam, but I have not. Just be sure to give it with food! |

His leg was actually bowed from everything so surgery was necessary. He tends to start walking sideways after awhile, lol. The vet just showed me how badly underdeveloped his muscles are in that leg that had surgery. So we will be doing water therapy as soon as the hot tub gets filled up. She also recommended a sit and get up exercise, sort of like knee bends...it's just a matter of getting him to learn that one. But overall, his prognosis is very, very good. :) |

LP Thanks Lady Jane and everyone else!! It is good news to hear that surgery is not always the way for this. We will keep our fingers crossed that Gunner won't need surgery! Thanks all, Karen |
