possible scratched eye form a plastic plate This just happened 2 howers ago, and of course on a weekend! I noticed Gizmo's eye wasn't opening all the way. I think what may have happened is that I was out of paper plates and gave him a teaspoon of ice cream on a disposable plastic plate, and before I knew it, he had finished the ice cream and was wrestling with the plate. Now I think he may have scratched his eye. Upon inspecting I see no damage, but it's hard to tell, since he won't sit still. My question is, can or should I use adult Visine or drops for pink eye until Monday when I can get him to the vet? I'm not sure what to do for him. He doesn't seem to be in pain, he's just squinting and favoring that eye. Any suggestions? |
He might have scratched his cornea and that is VERY painful. I have no idea about using Visine or pink eye meds on a pet that are normally used for humans. Do you have an ER vet in your area? You should consider taking him in to be seen. You cannot see a scratched cornea with your bare eye, they need to put drops into the eye and look at it with a special light. *If he is squinting and favoring that eye then he is in pain. :( |
My daughter scratched her cornea at about two months old and the ER used drops that glowed With a black light. The cut was glowing. I almost passed out lol. She scratched her eye with her own finger nail ??? |
OMG! Never use Visine or human drops in any dog's eye. The vet needs to determine if there is a cut to determine the type of medicine to use. Using the wrong medication can cause delay in healing and more exposure to infection. Sterile saline eye rinse and artificial tears are the only human products safe to use on animals without knowing the cause and degree of damage. I would get to a vet to get the correct diagnosis and medicine so your pup doesn't lose his sight or his eye and can be made comfortable. |
One of my puppies from my last litter had his eye scratched by his big brother. It turned into an infection and he has been battling that for a couple months. His eye is slowly getting better but it takes a long time to heal. I would get your guy into the vet first thing tomorrow. |
Thank you, all. I will make an appointment monday and see what the vet. can do. I havent used any drops, I was just asking. His eye is much better today. The whites of his eye is red and he is still squinting, but not like he was last night. |
Scratched cornea Bailey scratched both of her corneas last week and has been in a lot of pain. Took her to the ER and she has tears we put in both eyes and a antibiotic so it heals. It is VERY painful and she is also on pain medicine. Be very careful with pain medication - sometimes it causes them to get hyper especially if they get too much. |
