Toby sick/possible Addison's Disease We had to take Toby into the emergency room at MSU early this morning. He vomited, stumbled around, and then fell over on his side. He's been there all day, we're still waiting to hear about test results. The ER doctor feels it may be Addison's Disease. Other possibilities he tossed out were liver shunt and cancer. We don't know if he will be coming home today or not, the dr. will call us sometime after 5 and let us know what they may have found out. Anyone have any experience with Addison's? From what I've read, that's probably the best diagnosis he could get. |
You must be worried sick but at least you can go to MSU... I am thinking positive thoughts. |
Well, I do know only a little about it bc my Wylie has the opposite of Addisons, which is Cushings - and Wy actually has Atypical Cushing's disease. I give Wy a chemo pill 3x week - the goal is to "shave away" layers of his adrenal glands - BUT if we go too far or the med is too much, you can actually then CAUSE Addisons. Cushing's is extremely complicated. If your kiddo has Addisons - you'll probably have to medicate w/ a cortisone type drug for life, but at least the treatment is pretty straightforward - and this is good. I hope your baby gets a firm Dx soon. Here is more info: Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) in Dogs |

Is this the same one who had the anesthesia problem? When you took him to MSU, did the say his liver enzymes were okay? Did they do a bile acids test? |

At least once you know for sure, you can then follow a protocol for treatment - and that's a relief. Please keep us posted. You'll be in my thoughts - my boys have their paws crossed for Toby. :) |
Just heard back from the vet. Toby will be staying there overnight for more observation and to wait for test results. Good news is he has no obstruction and no liver shunt. YAY! They are thinking more positively that it's Addison's but nothing definitive until at least tomorrow. He has not vomited anymore, so they're going to give him some food and see how he does. I hate that he has to stay, but at least there is someone with him all night. Poor Lola has been lost without her Toby today:( Thank you guys so much for being here. Ann, tell your boys we appreciate their paws being crossed!!! Crystal, Toby is the one who had the issue with anesthesia. Luckily he hadn't had anything to eat or drink all night, so they did the BAT this morning and it came back normal. That was one of my biggest fears in this, so I consider us very lucky. I know his issues are nothing compared to some of what you guys have to deal with, but man it's tough when they're sick! It really helps to know you guys understand:) |

Of course, if Marcel has to go to the vet, Wylie is all "whatever, see ya later". :p Hope you'll get good news tomorrow! :) |
I will keep Toby in my prayers. |
Just checking for an update. :) Okay, just realized it's only 6:50, lol, like you've even had time yet! :p |

The visiting rules in most veterinary hospitals are just unrealistic for worried owners. :( Aren't you a good hour or two from Lansing? I couldn't stand being that far away. :( It really doesn't sound like pancreatitis, but who knows. |

It's 10 here. |

One thing...if I know my boys have to stay at the vet for extended time, I bring in their donut bed for them (you may want to ask first, I suppose) and then wash it when we get home. But yeah, I wish they had a bed you could cuddle with him on! |
