Prey raw food, blood in stool I'm sorry but I posted in the library section under the raw diet when I think it should be here. Sorry Mod. oh oh have a problem. I started the prey diet for Jemma on Saturday. Started with chicken, bone and all. Her stool is very very hard. This morning I saw a taint of fresh red blood. Bright, not dark. Also her stool has kinda white in it. Bone? Wondering if they are kinda nicking her rectum as she tries to poo. Was is her stool so rock hard. I'm starting to feel terrible about starting her on the prey model. Any help would be appreciated, like fast, lol |
Did you do a gradual transition or start her on the new diet all at once? I know a lot of people will say that you can make a complete switch to raw with no transition period but I don't think this is right for all cases. This works fine for some pups but others NEED time to transition. With the hard poo, it sounds like maybe her system needs more time to adjust. |
White stool on raw is normal. Blood is not and the diet could have caused it. Or it could be something else entirely like parasites (doubtful) or colitis. |
I've just started to try to transition my little male to a raw diet. I've spoken to Susan Davis, a holistic nutritionist, and she gave me the diet for him. I am a little concerned about the size of the bone frament that I have found in the Nature's Variety Raw. I have been afraid that they could be too large for his intestinal tract and then you post this...does anyone have any advice or experience with this. I have emailed Natures Variety and they have said there should be no piece larger than 1/2", but that seems awfully large for these small yorkies. Did your brand have large bone fragment? ~~~ Valerie |
I had my 4 on the raw natures variety for a month , my two silkie terriers and my yorkie jack, did great with it, but my little Prada my yorkie had blood in her stool, took her to the vet and he asked me to put her back on kibble for a couple of days and bring another stool sample and the blood was gone, so no raw for my crew we are back on kibble and wet.. hugs, Carmen in nj |
The white is from the bone/calcium. Did you overfeed her at all? Or, did you feed the 2-3%? Some dogs will always have adjustment issues, but the blood is kind of odd. |
White stool is from the bone but it actually means that you are feeding too much bone. White stool every now and then is fine (IMO) but in the beginning I think you should do less bone. Remember prey model is 80-10-10. So you should still be feeding mostly meat with only 10% bone and 10% organ. The blood might be because you had too much bone. Bright red blood would mean its from the rectum or anus (if it was from the intestines it would be more black and tarry). Probably the stool was too firm for your pup to handle at this time. I would suggest you cut back on the amount of bone you are feeding especially for in the beginning. Mine gets meat with a little bit of organ (usually liver) in the morning and then meat and bone at night. If the blood continues (even after you cut back on the amount of bone) you may want to take her to the vet to get check out just in case it is not caused by her diet or firm stools. |
I love ya all for answering me so quick. So far she seems ok. I will fee her just 3 oz of meat tonight only. Thank you all, my home away from home.!! |
Glad she's doing better! :) |
