Help Help buprenorpine reaction after spayed

I need help heres background, My ayla was spayed on tuesday and she was perscribed metacam .2mil once a day for 3 days. Did ok but on wensday she has jumped on couch and tried to play to hard but I stopped that. She has been whining about what to expect but last night she just couldnt get confey she even slept on our bed and she normally crawls in her crate on her own when I come to bed she also has not been drinking water so I added about 2 tablespoons to each meal, she is homecooked she also has alergies right now too, but since surgery that seems to not be bothering her. So today I called told them what she had done and my concerns and they say bring her in. I did and she says everything was ok no damage to incesion no real swelling. So she said she may need some pain meds for today and tommorow and then she should be fine. I asked what the side effects to watch for and she said it was fine and that I could continue to give her the last of the metacam. They percribed her buprenorphine .01mils. Well I gave it to her at 12:00 when I got home mixed in her meal (she skipped her morning meal) and she ate most of it but not all so she didnt even get a full dose. but she finally slowed down for about 2 hrs. but then she woke up with super girl power omg she was running around panting and it wasnt hot and was so excited to see dh I had to go to work so didnt seem bad then but I guess she cont. to pant, she doesnt do this hardly at all. She went around whinning with a toy in her mouth even she could find were to sit or even what room to go in. So then my husban after about 11/2 of this called the vet they said bring her in at first they thought that the vet gave her a dose but she didnt. they said that she must be allergic to it but if we wanted to cont. it we could try can you believe that:eek: no no no oh i wish I was the one to bring her in well they gave her nothing for the reaction and she still at 6 pm having anxity and running around whinning know its 7;30 and she has crashed. oh she has started to have a little runny stool but still somewhat solid. I cant believe they didnt give her Epinephrine so her gums or little pale but when I push on them the blood goes and comes back ok not as fast as I would like. She was hypoglycimia so this is a test I do to her when watching for signs. Not sure what to do. Her temp. was ok and heart rate was normal its been almost 8 hrs. she is sleeping know but I am scared she may not wake up. Help

Have you tried to wake her? if not do so. What's the med for? and when was her surgery?

lillymae 09-10-2009 07:30 PM

Ok. I just read again. She should not need pain meds this many days after surgery. And she still has bouts of hypoglycemia? give her some nutri cal. I would not give any more pain meds as they usually only need them for 2 or 3 days. It is common for a bit of diarrhea and or constipation after surgery so just keep an eye on that. You can give her a bit of canned pumpkin for the runs. The trouble with the pain meds is that they feel so good that you can't keep them down. She needs to rest and heel. Is she carrying her toy around with her constantly? does she seem anxious with her toy? or anxious in general?

The last questions I ask because sometimes when a dog is spayed , they actually think they had puppies. They become very anxious, pant allot and act as if their toys are the puppies. You would not believe how many vets have never heard of this. I'm not talking false pregnancy I mean they actually think they have had puppies even when they have never had a litter. If this is what her problem is, she will need HTR for awhile. Without the HTR she will become neurotic and most often stay that way. For whatever reason some times the sudden hormone change affects dogs in this way. So if it appears as if this could be her problem you need to find a vet who is familiar with this condition to get her straightened out.

um yes she started to whine and pick up her baby and walk around for awhile yesterday but after we gave her that new pain med she was doing it alot more and more anxitiy. When my husband left this morning she wimpered for a good 5 min. she normally dont do that I was in the room with her. no they hypo has not been an issue but after reading on side affects on this med there gum can go grey and thats a bad sign. anyways she did go threw her first heat 2 months ago at 6 1/2 month old and she also went threw false prego up intell about 3 weeks ago. she filled up with milk and everything. she coddled her baby some too. But that went away. This is like way more severe. She is out of the woods I think she finally drank a spoonful and ate. I also gave her her last anti inflammotory dose she was in pain she was all curled up and wimpering. She much more relaxed and not so anxsious she still doing the baby thing though, but not as bad. oh whats htr? Thanks for the reply I am so thinking she may have this. How long before going to a doctor for this?

False Labor????

Sorry it was hard to read the above ,I was typing in a hurry panic mode. ok I have sat back and calmed down and thought this threw and read on labor more and here is what I have came up with. Before the spay she had false pregnancy she had full nipples coddled her toys some, attitude change. Now I am not sure if she was completely done with that before we had her fixed. Her tits where no longer swollen but she would lick them sometimes still. So vet says to wait a few more weeks before spaying. I went 3 weeks.

Well we bring her home after spay and she out of it. Yesterday it started she started to jerk around as if her belly hurt it was wierd she would jerk around he hind end like she was hurting. She also started to dig. Dig in her crate, digging on her beds, any blankets our bedding on our bed like crazy like. We would try to stop her thought it may be hurt her belly. Whining and just seamed miserable. I went to the store last night and got her a new toy stuff animal. Thats when the she took it in her mouth and started to whine the most. She continued to whine last night was super uncomfortable, (all I was thinking is was the surgery)she also slept in our bed never does this. today she did some jerking with her back end like backwards she continued her whinning at everything was looking for somewhere to go but not sure where, I also told the vet this. She went to the doc. meds all above mentioned seemed to be having a reaction to it.

after I left for work she was super freaking out looking for someplace to go, digging blankets even went into her baby crate and was digging at the blankets ect. She was panting too for like 4 hrs. Thats the part my husband was freaking out about. She then disappeared. my husband found her panting under the bed, note she has never gone under the bed. since I wrote the above she has wanted to be alone in the bedroom she is right now grabbing her toys and take them to our bed. When I shut the door omg she freaked out. I opened it and she ran in grabbed her toy and ran off with it. lol it was funny but sad. Poor thing has know given birth to a gecko, bunny, little monkey, and octapus. She babys the gecko the most, thats the one I got her yesterday so its new. She just came in trying to find her whelping spot again she is panting a little not as much. she is wanting our bed to be it, but hubby is there and its not working out for her, this just goes on and on. I tried to pick up the gecko and she started kinda freak out, jumping for it whining so on. I gave it back and she is now licking him. Ill try to take pics. So, I am thinking that these are signs but whats the condition called and has anyone eles gone threw this. I am realy going to need help she is just whining and carring that gecko, and the bunny now too. back and forth so confussed do I incourge this or do I take the toys away not sure. dont want to make this worse. oh i am in for another long journey. I will be calling the vet in the morning asap but not sure why she didnt think this when I gave her most of the symptoms and with the false pregnancy hmmmm well we will see what she says.

lillymae 09-11-2009 07:41 AM

That's exactly what's wrong with her. Do not take her toys away it will only stress her more. And fortunately I knew the signs because 14 1/2 yrs ago during my 1st year working for a vet my 6 mo old american eskimo did this only she wasn't in heat when she was spayed nor did she ever have false PG. She is now 15 yrs old and still neurotic from it. I mean she is not the same dog she was before the spay. If your vet has never heard of this you need to call around till you find one who has. The vet I use for my pets now has heard of it , but not really a name for it. He says they need HRT rite away just like a woman who has had a historectomy. Most dogs can be weened off the HRT after a bit. But you need to find someone to help her ASAP. I would not give her any more pain meds as pain is not her problem. She may be reacting to the surgery or the stitches as you can feel little pokes from both and this is normal. She is staying away to care for her false puppies and panting from stress not pain. Also anti depressants can sometimes help.
If she tends to be hypoglycemic just keep an eyr out for that as the stress takes up energy so keep her hydrated and give nutrical.

Ok , so I called my vet and he said to call WSU. He has heard of it but never treated it and if he were to see a dog with this problem , he would cunsult WSU. I see you are in Spokane so it's not too far, just over an hour for you. They may tell you what it is or you could ask your vet to cunsult WSU. Good luck and please keep updated as this is not common and people will learn from your experience. Do not be afraid to talk to your vet about this and let them know , you don't believe it is a med reaction.

wow I already looked up wsu but wasnt sure what or were to start. I did call the vet the tech there said that this is what it sounds like and that to watch her tits. To let her do her thing should be down in 2-3 weeks. But I have done some investagating of my own and this is rare for after a spay but can happen and I thought I wonder if wsu wanted this case but then again ginny pig her not sure but I will call and least see what they say. Thanks so much for going out of way and calling your vet. I did notice that lots of ppl and vets are against the hormone and even if you find someone then it may be hard to get. I also am looking into the holistic side too. I am a aromatherapist/massage therapist so of course I like natural remedies if they can help first. I also believe in the western meds. to but She is so sensitive to so much not sure what to do. My faith in vets is not good in the last 6 months ayla has seen 4 vets and has been in the emergancy 4 times. She has had quit the journey in her little life. Anyways its 3pm so I'll call and see what they say. Ill keep you updated I also moved post to false labor question. I have been video taping her so I can put this on the internet for ppl to see.
