Robin, the doctor's report sounded upbeat and positive to me...at least that was my interpretation. I know there's still quite a way to go but I feel encouraged by what you have written in the update. Know that Ginger and you and Nick are getting lifted up in prayer tonight by lots of folks here on yorkietalk. It just melts my heart to read so many well wishes and caring posts for Ginger and you. Hang in there and try to get some quality rest. After all, Aunt Robin and Uncle Nick have new titles tonight! Congrats on the new addition! |

your a good breeder to take the puppy back. it is sad though that people get a puppy and when things go bad and they cost money they put them down. people should not get dogs if they cant take care of their health needs. dogs are like children they are going to get sick and they are going to get hurt. im learning about liver shunt as well and worried my little one might have it. and if she does she is going to get the best care out their. im going to give her whatever chance she has no matter what the cost she is my baby. good luck with everything and i will be praying for you and your baby. |
Robin, I can't get little Ginger off my mind. How is she today? Have you had the doctor's report yet? I know you're swamped so I'll just catch your updates here unless I get too impatient. Then you know I'll PM or call...LOL |
Update I am picking her up at 6pm! :D :D :D She did well last night off of her fluids and dextrose, so they feel more comfortable with her coming home. :D :D I have so much to do to finish getting ready for her. My house is a wreck (I always feel like this when we leave town and come back) because I haven't had time to do much here but that's not a priority (although it does make me feel like a bad wifey sometimes). So if anyone has any particular questions that they think I should add to my list when I have my consult, please speak up! Thank you guys SO MUCH for your prayers! Of course, I will be updating with photos and videos of her as much as I can. You all will be so Ginger-ed out (if that's possible!). ;) hehe |

And, my advice is to forget your house for now. It will still be there when you have time. Lol. Take care.... |
Glad Ginger is coming home to her Mommy and Daddy :D:D:D |
Robin Im so sorry this happened. My heart is happy though that you are the type person to go all out to save this pup. You will be in my thoughts and prayers daily. Those videos just broke my heart. I have heard and read alot about shunts but I have never witnessed it before. Believe me it left a lasting impression. I now know why there are so many breeders on here that want people to test their dogs before breeding. Gosh Im sorry. |
Good luck Ginger! We're all pulling for you here in Pa.! You've got a great Mommy too! |
payslee says to give sissy a special hug from her and we hope she gets well very very soon. |
Those videos are so heartwrenching! Such a tiny little angel! Do you even know how special you are?!! This world is a better place with you in it!!! God Bless You!! |

Woo Hoo! I've been playing football (LOL) and just now got back to check the Ginger status. Hooray! From what I gather, you're at your in-laws tonight and then home with Ginger tomorrow, right? I hope you get some rest before you start the journey home. Such good news about your litle one! I'll catch you tomorrow. I've just plumb tuckered out from TN Titans football. We went into overtime against the Steelers but lost. However, considering they were last year's Super Bowl champs and we were at their house, going into overtime is a win in my book! The comical thing around here tonight was Taffy's reactions when we scored. I think she thought we needed medical attention...LOL Just wait unti the TN Vols play...LOL |
2 Attachment(s) Debbie, you are correct. I am at my in laws tonight and will be driving home tomorrow (its a 4 hour drive). I will be up every 3-3 1/2 hours to feed her (which she HATES so its NOT fun at all). I have attached 2 pictures. Sorry they are kind of blurry, she would not sit still! :D What a typical puppy. This is a video of the doctor and a student showing me how to syringe feed her. Its a struggle every 3 hours. She hates it. I am hoping that she will love the dry food more than this canned stuff. |
Thankyou for the updates. I was thinking about her alot today. I am really glad that you will be bringing her home! The yahoo group is amazing isn't it? So much wonderful info there. Praying that she continues to do well. |
Aww, look at how cute she is! I was just checking in for an update & am so happy to hear she's on her way home. Hang in there baby girl! |
Just read your story and updates. Saying lots of prayers for you and Ginger. Glad to see she is coming home with you and don't worry so much about your house...You are an indeed an angel. She is one sweet baby! |
May God bless you and your family for having the faith and love for this baby girl. She is so lucky to have you. Best of luck. |
Robin, Robin, Robin.... Need an update on how well Ginger did on the trip home! I hope she's eating and you're resting. Update soon as I can't get Ginger off my mind! I just need to know you are home safe and sound and settled back in. I bet Max, Molly, and Dozer are so happy to see her. |
Update 3 Attachment(s) We are now back home in KY! :D The ride was fine and Ginger ended up getting in my lap and sleeping most of the way home. I have attached some videos of when Max and Molly first saw her. :) They were so excited. Shew, let me tell you! You don't realize how many random kibbles you have on the floor until you hear them crunching on it and you are like "oh no, where did she get that?!" So I have been on my hands and knees trying to pick up any kibble that she is not allowed to have. She is perky and very investigative. Because I am somewhat anxious, I will be limiting some of her "free roam" time (which is good since she is a puppy anyway). For those who are familiar with the dry RC HLS 14 food, how much should I be giving her? What I have calculated is around 3.0 oz a day (it doesn't look like much). The back of the bag says 3/4c for a 5lb dog. She is exactly 2.0lb. I figured that I would make sure she is eating at least the 3oz. If she isn't, I will suppliment with a syringe. What if she wants more food, is that ok? Sorry, just trying to pick some of your alls brains. ;) Ginger is willing to eat the dry Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 food! HOORAY!! The syringe feeding was no fun! Here is a video of Max and Molly seeing Ginger for the 1st time. :) Sorry the quality is very poor (cell phone). And here are some pictures of her this morning. The first two, she is in her carrier and is whining to get out... and the last one is after breakfast. :) She says hello to everyone! :) |
oh my goodness how cute is that!?! I'm so glad you all made it back home and that Ginger is eating and happy to be home! |
You need to spread the amount of kibble thru out the day. Most LS babies do best with 6 meals and this may mean into the late night. Start our on the minimal amount. If you find she is still hungry, increase her kibble by 1 or 2 pieces each time. Her actions will tell you if she is getting too much protein. |
Good to see Ginger with an appetite and playing. What a great job you are doing. :) |
she looks great - ok i have decided you have to keep her after watching the videos with mom and dad with her :) she is going to do great :) so happy you got her as she looks great now |

This may sound anal, but I THINK she needs about 3oz... which is exactly 100 pieces of kibble. So if that is divided into 6 feedings, she will need to be 16-17 pieces of kibble during each feeding. What I may do is put down 17 pieces of kibble and if she has not eaten it by the 4 hour mark, I will sit down with her and try to encourage her. When it is eaten, I will go ahead and put down 17 more pieces so that she can either nibble on it over the next 4 hours or just eat the rest of it at the next 4 hour mark (does that make sense?). It may sound tedious, but I don't mind. It will give me a better idea on how much she really is eating. If she wants more, I will add 1-2 kibbles, like you suggested. Thanks. :) Quote:
Another thing. I don't want everyone to think that Max and Molly was NOT tested. They were last year (before I got them). It had not been a full year since their tests that I bred them so I didn't feel as though it was needed again (maybe I was wrong?). Both of the BATs were normal last year. I wonder if they could've changed much over the year? I will be having them tested again in the next few months just to make sure. The research that Dr. Tobias has is fascinating. I read that she took 2 dogs that had liver shunts, repaired them, bred them and they produced 2 healthy pups. I sure hope they are able to find a genetic marker in her research study to help prevent liver shunts from ever happening in the future. And don't worry, we are totally keeping her! DH even agrees this time even though now we will have 4 dogs and 2 cats! lol |
I could not believe my eyes when I saw Ginger running and playing in the yard! Prayers answered! |
Robin, I am so very sorry to hear the sad saga of Ginger. It does sound like she is a fighter, which is a huge plus for you. If she decides that she won't eat the Hills LD food or the dry kibble, you might check with your vet about home cooking. Hills has home cooked version recipe for ALL of their specialty foods that they make available to vets. |

Robin, it is hard to believe that is the same child...errrr, I mean puppy! Wow! Precious footage of her reunion with Max and Molly! I had also been thinking that this is the way it worked out so you could have a puppy. Funny how life works out sometimes, huh? I am so glad you are home and Ginger is home. Ahhhhhh...you are some kind of good mommy, girlfriend...you "did" good! |
