you cannot really see a liver shunt on ultrasound unless they are highly skilled in finding them so it would be a waste of 400 :( as they are not cheap. Ask what his alt numbers were on a blood panel -- did they do blood work? Ask them if pre and post bile acids are able to be done since your little one is so tiny

i am thinking so as well :( but my neighbors dachsund was really sick with giardia as a puppy as well and hospitalized

The same thing happened to my Lola when I brought her home last year in March. The only difference was that she was 12 weeks old. The first weekend I had her home she became very lethargic and I rushed her to the Emergency Vet hospital. After the third night, they still were not able to completely stabilize her blood sugars. They called and told us what the bill was at that point and what the next 24 hours bill was going to be....they then told us what our options were - 1) continue to do what we were doing 2) put her "down" 3) take her home, which they called the "ultimate test", and get up every 2 hours around the clock and syringe feed her. I wanted her home with me, so they showed me how to syringe feed her without choking her (which was very scary at 2 in the morning!) and I got up for the next 5 nights every 2 hours, then the next 3 nights every 4 hours, the next 3every 6 hours and fed her. They suspected Liver Shunt but she was too small and too young to test. We had Lola tested in Feb. of this year and she did have a shunt. We flew to TN to have her shunt repaired and she is fine, healthy and strong today. I'm certainly not saying you should do this with your baby. Lola was NOT throwing up and did not have diarreah. It may be that your baby needs an IV to stay hydrated. Also, have you tried feeding Gerbers baby food - chicken (warmed)? That is what we fed Lola. I'm sending prayers your way....Good luck!

He is still not eating . They are siringe feeding him now. they are taking him off the IV glucose again to see how he is off and with the siringe feeding. vet said i can care for him at home if glucose is not too low. I told her to run the full liver workup to check for the liver shunt. ultrasound will be done after we get him eating and clear the parasites. thanks all ill post later

I'm no expert, but I do not think you can run a BAT that will be conclusive at this point. I'm sure that is not the only test they are running for the liver, but I don't think you can run it for a shunt at this age. I could be wrong, but check with your vet.

How old was she when she was tested for LS and how was it diagnosed? The vomiting has stopped and the diareah has consistency now. which is a little better. He has Coccidia. and hoping that is the only problem. Vet said if liver comes back high then it is a good chance that he has LS. I am just hoping he can hold his glucose levels when i bring him home and syringe feed him.

I brought Lola home and she seemed to do fine for a very long time - other than me having to hand feed her ALL of the time. I waited far too long to have her tested for Liver Shunt. My vet kept telling me she was fine - that she was gaining weight and that she was not "sick". It was always in the back of my mind, so when I was going to have her spayed at 13 months I insisted that they BAT (bile acid test) her. Her numbers (very high) indicated she had a shunt, so we went to Dr. Tobias in TN and had it corrected. Lola never had any neurological signs of a shunt other than a poor appetite, very picky eater and she was very slowly having less energy. I even thought the energy part may be because she was getting older and growing out of her "puppy stage". Now that her shunt has been repaired (3/09), I see how energetic she is once again. Please don't hesitate to ask any more questions - that's how we all learn...and it is a learning process!!!! Good Luck.

Vet is running a panel now and will call between 12-2. Ultrasound there is $1,000. Vet wants to first focus on clearing up parasites and getting him to eat. but i believe there is something else wrong like the LS...thanks

I never did the Ultrasound. I was told only Doppler Ultrasound would show the shunt. Please keep us posted! Good luck - I know how stressful this is.

yeah liver shunt and hypoglycemia are hand in hand :( hopefully just the coccidia but my gut is liver related -- I think they have to be 20 weeks to test for liver shunt so your baby is a little young but you have to get past this phase first I think and then definitely have your pup bile acid tested - so sorry you are going through this all and yes the vet bills add up quick -- go to CareCredit® Healthcare Finance - Payment Plans and Financing for Cosmetic Surgery, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Veterinary & Other Medical Procedures as it is so many months same as cash and ask your vet if they take care credit as i use this for vet bills to spread them out

Thankfully, New Jersey has tough puppy lemon laws. You are entitled to be reimbursed for your vet bills up to the purchase price of your puppy.

The OP can collect by filing a claim in small claims court. She should also report the breeder to the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General's Office (Consumer Protection).

I would go to small claims court for sure --I wish i had done that with Dee Dee before her breeder left california as she has cost me a small fortune :(

Our sweet baby had a very weak appetite when we brought her home. The vet recommended esbilac puppy formula, which helped her diarreah and her appetite. We gave it to her in a syringe.

I went to see him this afternoon. I was with him for over an hour and did not want to leave him. but, i spoke to a friend that is a exotic/small animal vet and she suggests to leave him there one more night and have them get him off the iv and iv glucose and prepare him for home care prior to me picking him up tomorrow. she also said that the coccicida causes inflamation of the intestines and perhaps that he may not be eating b/c he is in pain and to have the hospital give him some pain killer in small amount to relieve and relax him to eat. Well he looks much better than yesterday and he ate 1 teaspoon of baby food and was much more active and GAVE ME LOTS OF PUPPY KISSES and i did not want to let him go. He is so sweet! He had the liver workup and an ultrasound for Liver Shunt and both were negative. so that is a big plus!

I HAD to pick him up today. the bill for the 4 days was $2270...omg! After they took him off the Dextrose they feed him every 2 hours by syringe and .5 oral dextrose. so i have him home now and am continuing to feed every two with the .5 dextrose. they increased it from .25 because his Glucose Level was 25! but i have not choice but to care for him at this point at home. He abdomen is VERY swollen. he is sleeping a lot and just looks ok. he is kissing but not perky at all. i am so worried. I am bringing him along with my other 2 to the vet tomorrow. for the 2 girls now have diareah:eek:I am so upset and scared now
I called the Health Dept in the town that i purchased him and they are very excited to stop these people. They are having the head of the county spca call soon with instructions and they will hopefully invade the home soon and they will be issued summons. I will probably gain little financially back from them but i am pressed criminal charges.
The woman i purchased him from claims to be Melva Langford from TX. Well little to say i googled the name, got a # and called today and the woman in NJ is not HER and THE REAL MELVA LANGFORD IS STILL IN TX who had sold the pup to her. well they are USDA breeder ( puppy mill farm in another words) and they are elderly and very upset. They sell to brokers and pet stores. They sold 4 pups recently to Carlos and Carmen Lopez . Who knows if they gave a real name to them either. but I told him that MELVA LANGFORD SOLD ME THIS SICK PUP AND THE NJ DIV OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS WILL BE ON HIS A$$ along with the health dept ,SO i upset him because i was making a point that this woman stole his wifes idenity. i also told him that the pup was only a pound and he really freaked out... saying it could not be his pup b/c he dont release them till there 2lbs. this world is so cruel and i dont know who to believe

The couple i brought them from SAID the were the breeder Melva Langford from Texas. I googled the name and got a number yesterday and called and got a DIFFERENT woman. The real breeder said he sold 4 pups to Carlos and Carmen Lopez in Freehold NJ and he did not know that they were bringing the pups to NJ. I just faxed the 2 Unfit for Sale documents along with the bills to the Freehold dept of Health and they will issue them a summons and inspect the property. They seemed to be aware of the people selling dogs from the house but now they have something on them to work with so the health dept was quite excited to have my info and the SPCA will be in contact with me also.

Gigio was in and out of the hospital for about 3 weeks. the worst thing about the pravo
was I couldn't hold her. I had to stay about 5 feet away from her. she had to stay in a room with no other dogs because of the virus, for about 4 days. But good news now is that she is eating and playing like a 6 month year old Yorkie should. hang in there, things will work out.

NJ does have a puppy lemon law and without looking I believe you are entitled to the vet bills up to the cost of the dog but would have to go back and check that out. Since, it was 0ut and out right deception criminal charges can also be brought up against them and I believe you can also file for punitive damages as well. I do think thought that you will need some sort of notarized statement from the people in Texas. If I'm reading correctly the people in Texas are a mill in which case I would not really hold much stock in what they are saying. In my oppinion they are probably well aware of everything and just trying to cover their own butts. Elaine

I live in Howell/ Farmingdale. Before purchasing him i looked up puppy kennels, mills and brokers in NJ and I have heard of one hear in Howell. I have to go to the police Dept in Freehold either Thursday or Friday to file a complaint and charges against them. but the BIG PROBLEM is that i dont know there REAL names??? the home that they are living in is a rental and i have to contact the rental co tomorrow for info also the Health Dept is working on finding out that info too for they are going to inspect the home because it is not registered as a business and has a history of selling dogs and now they have proof that there is a problem
