Recovery after diarrhea I am just wondering how long it takes the system to get back to normal. Toby was vomiting and had diarrhea on Sunday and Monday. I took him to the vet on Tuesday. He got an antibiotic injection, and a probiotic paste to line his stomach. He was not to be fed on Tuesday to allow the paste to line his stomach. His first feed was 5.30am this morning. I have been giving him boiled rice, chicken and probiotic yogurt every 2-3 hours (little and often). It is now 7.30pm and he had not had a bowel movement since diarrhea on Monday night. Is this normal, I hope he isnt constipated now?! He is behaving normally in every other way. |
I just went thru this with Moses. It took him a day to go after the diarreha stopped. I was like you, oh great, now he is constipated, but he did go. It was probably later in the evening before he went. He is just now eating his regular food after a week on the chicken/rice, but I am still giving him yogurt twice a day. I never want to go thru anything like that again. It's awful, but when he goes now, I walk over to look to make sure it is firm. If he starts getting loose stools again, back on c/r until it is gone. |
Chances are, he won't be constipated but it will take a little time for his system to get back to normal for him to form a stool. His little system was pretty cleaned out if he had the runs from Sunday to Monday, so no he's got to get that bulk back up... :) |
Thats great! no doubt he will wait until the middle of the night and then need out! But boy will I be glad to see it, I am just praying that it is firm. |
It'll be soft but formed. Bailey has chronic Pancreatitis, so that's why I know so much about going through this... :( It's under control now thank god, but at least I can help others! |
I think he went this morning. It was formed, but soft as you mentioned. It was still very yellow. Is this normal? |

Hi Everyone, My Denzil is going through this too, isn't it awful? he is on a probiotic paste to line his stomach which he started taking yesterday so has had 3 doses so far. His stools are still very runny and there is no form to them, I am wondering how long it will take to 'kick in'. His little bottom looks a bit tender and slightly swollen too. I never thought to try probiotic yoghurt, so I'll get some tomorrow and see if that helps. I think all this is the result of a spot on flea treatment I put on him last Wednesday, I used one suitable for puppies even though Denzil is nearly 16 months old. Kind regards, Tracy |
Its been almost a week since Tobys diarrhea started. He finishes his course of antibiotics tomorrow. His stools are still soft and yellow, but formed. I have started to introuce a small bit of Orijen back into his rice and chicken today. I will transition him slowly and hope to see the stools going back to normal. |
Sometimes, it can realllly take time for the digestive system to normalize - it's happened w/ my guys before. Plus, the soft stool could be from the meds as well. Hang in there, it will get better :). Are you adding fiber or probiotics? That might help too... |
Theres been a change this morning. I reintroduced a few pieces of kibble (orijen) at each meal yesterday. I started him on probiotic yogurt yesterday again (I had ran out). He was chewing on a bully stick this morning. His first stool this morning was soft yellow and formed, as it had been all week. The next stool (after the bully stick) was back to a dark colour, but was very runny and watery. Would the bully stick bring on the runniness that soon again after eating it? It is more likely to be the Orijen that I started the day before? Is the colour change a good sign? |
Aaack! I'm just seeing this! YES there's a HUGE possibility that the bullystick is adding to or bringing on the runs. I've been told that the Bully sticks are hard for them to digest. Bailey does not do well with them. Every time I would give him a Bully stick he would have a problem. Your baby might not have a problem with bully sticks, HOWEVER right after having boughts of bathroom problems I would not give it to him. I would wait at least a week, week and a half and only allow him to have it for like 5 min. at a time and then let him slowly work his way up time wise to chewing it longer. If it seems that his system can handle it then you can let him have it longer. I hope that makes sense. Sorry it took so long for me to respond. How's he doing now? I have Bailey on a power probiotic too! I use a pill form tho. :) Quote:

Re: Our Yorkie's bout with diarrhea We go on frequent RV trips with our Yorkie (who is now 15 years young!) and she came down with a case of diarrhea (which happens on almost every RV trip we take with her.) She resumed normal bowel movements 3 days after we started treating her symptoms. Took her to a vet and he prescribed lomotil (which is used on humans) to stop the diarrhea, and metrondazole (an antibiotic) to deal with possible blood in her stomach... (her diarrhea was almost black in color.) She's doing fine now,... but she is 15 and she has lost most of her eyesight. One thing we noticed as her eyes got worse,... she frequently looks at our reflections in mirrors rather than looking at us directly. That's been going on for about three months now. We think it may have something to do with putting more light into her pupils??? She is almost blind. Anybody else have a similar experience with mirrors and their Yorkies? We know her time with us is drawing to an end and we will miss her very much. But, we will be left with wonderful memories of the happiness she has given us in exchange for the best life we could offer to her year after year. :aimeeyork |
Bailey was also treated with Metrondazole. It works wonders! I agree with you about the light reflection, that was my first thought too. It's hard to think about our babies times coming to an end. try probiotics Hi, my dog Daisy who has MVD had repeated and chronic diarrhea for years due to the shunting of her liver coupled with inflammatory bowel diseases. We struggled with yogurt, flagyl drugs, and the whole kit n kaboodle for years and years. I started using a product for dogs a few years ago that takes care of the diarrhea in a flash. In fact, I just recommended it to a friend for some loose stools in her household! I swear, this is easier than the yogurt. Keep it in the fridge, it's great to have on had for the doggies.
