Scooting bottom on carpet? Why would a 1 year old female be scooting her bottom on the carpet every few minutes? I have seen Penny do this after a BM when she had some of it left on her, but not like this morning. Other than this, she is acting normal, eating normal, eliminating normally too. No new food or anything either. |
She may need to have her glands expressed. My groomer does this for Nolee and I notice when it has been a while that he has not been groomed he starts doing this. |
I agree, usually it means that the anal glands need to be expressed. But also could be that some poo may be stuck to the back hairs. This has happened also. Your vet's office or groomer can do this without an appt-usually. It may cost anywhere from $10-$15 to have it done. |

Joey had this problem as a puppy, some groomers express the glands whether they need it or not, but this is no longer recommended. The vet can show you the proper way to do it. If you do it wrong, you can push the contents further up the sac, and this could lead to impaction and infection, so doing it the right way is important. You can usually tell if this is the problem because the area is a little poofy. Other causes could be a sanitary grooming where the area was shaved, and this can lead to irritation. You might also want to aid a little fiber to the diet, if this is a common problem. I added about a teaspoon ground flax seed, and a few green beans, I don't know if they helped, but he doesn't have the problem any more. Definitely agree ; anal sacks. If you cannot get her to the vet right away, start placing warm cloths on her bottom for about 5 minutes, not hot, just warm, several times a day. This helps loosen up the material in the sack so it can start moving in the right direction. Good luck |
It could be simply that her butt itches for what ever reason. Try rubbing some A & D oint. or triple antibiotic oint. on it. |
Penny is better Sorry I disappeared on you guys after all your great suggestions and help. Upon further inspection, Penny had dried poop stuck in her hair. :eek: After giving her a good bath and trimming the hair on her rear, she is fine now. |
