Mr. Big is in the hospital today!!! Sushi's little maltese brother. Mr. Big, is in the hospital today! It all started this morning when I woke up, took Mr. Big to the bathroom to the pee pad, but he just plopped himself on top of all the old pee on the pad and spread out! He never does that!!!! Then I took him out for a walk with Sushi, he didn't wanna walk. In fact, he didn't even wanna take a single step! Weird! Brought them back home immediately. I knew something was off. He is my velcro dog, but this time he just went to bed and stayed there. Ok, by now I was worried sick. Rushed him to the vet. They tested the blood sugar and everything seemed to be normal. By the time we got to the vet though, he had already started to look better. Was walking better, and seemed like he is becoming his old self again. The only thing is, we went for a looooooong walk last night. And it was pretty hot outside. Maybe he got a bit too tired?! In any event, I did not wanna take any chances and bring him home and leave him alone for the rest of the day. So I just boarded him there so they could keep an eye on him in case he gets any worse. I called in twice during the day, and I was told that he was doing fantastic, and he was actually playing with the techs at the reception when I called. So I'm going to pick up my little boy in a couple hours. Apparently he is good to go home. But does anyone have any idea what really happened??? He's very tiny, under 3lb. |
First of all, hope Mr. Big is doing well and back to his normal velcro self:) I know that Toby, who is 5.5 pounds, can get very affected by the heat. He's used to being inside and we run our a/c most all the time, so when he does go out it doesn't take much to bother him. We had one episode where he was outside longer than usual, and he acted just like Mr. Big did for the next day. Sounds like you did the right thing by getting him to the vet and leaving him there to be watched. You're a good doggie mama! Good luck:) |
Thanks for the wishes, Becky. Just brought Mr. Big home. and he is sitting on my lap as we speak :) He is mostly doing well, except that he seems a bit more tired than usual. I was also told that instead of feeding him twice a day, I should feed him 3-4 times, because of his size and the risk of hypoglycemia. Just out of curiosity, how many times a day do you people of YT nation feed your furbabies? |
So glad Mr. Big is doing better! |

So happy to hear Mr. Big is settled down where he belongs. Once they have a scare like that, it makes the snuggle moments all the sweeter, doesn't it? Enjoy!:) |
It sounds like his blood sugar was low this morning to me. I have low blood sugar problems and that is how I feel too. (Not saying I would plop down on a dirty pee pad mind you! ) Did he eat before going to the vet, and maybe that is why he was feeling better and the blood tests were okay? |

The tests were ok. He didn'r eat before getting to the vet (I was so scared I didn't even think about feeding him first, I just wanted to get him somewhere safer than home!). But the vet said sometimes when they get out, or even get to the vet office (and recognize it) the adrenaline rush kicks up the blood sugar level for a while, and if that's what was happening when they did the test then it would show normal blood sugar! Now there was another problem this morning. Very weird, please please any input would be greatly appreciated: Took him to the pee pad this morning. He usually lifts the leg and lands a few drops on the corner. This morning, he squatted (like boys dogs do sometimes when they can't find a vertical sirface, you know? Like leaning forward a bit and peeing) and he started to pee. And he peed, and peed and peed and peed...honestly he was peeing for a good 30 seconds, and the pee circle on the pad was getting bigger and bigger (mind you, we're talking a bout a tiny little guy under 3 pounds). I was so surprosed, and was wondering when it was ever going to end! So I sat down and looked under the belly, there was nothing coming out at this time, but he continued to "squat", trying to squeeze something out. And then after a few seconds the final 2-3 drops came out and he walked away. Ok, maybe it's only my imagination, but I think the last 3 drops were kinda colourful. I think I saw a very very faint "red" tint. Inly those last drops. But then again, might have been the light in the bathroom, I don't know. Any idea what happened this morning again??????? |
Toby always squats like a girl.:D He also has a tendency sometimes to stay there forever for the last drop or two...not sure, must be a guy thing. As for the amount of pee, if the vet gave him fluids, that could account for that. If there was color to it, that's another issue that would need to be checked. I guess at this point I would suggest you pay very close attention to the pad when he goes and make sure it's just clear. I sure hope he's on the mend for your sake and his!:) |
Glad he is home. I still feed mine 4 times a day, 3 small meals and a bedtime snack and they are all adults. Maybe you could take a urine sample to your vet to check out for a UTI. |
Glad to hear Mr. Big is doing better.I feed my girls twice a day with a couple of snacks like blue berries.:D |
Good to hear Mr Big is at home. I free feed all three of my dogs. |
Glad to hear he is doing better. They can really give us a scare. |
