After the chicken & rice? Moses has had diarreha for the last week. I put him on the chicken & rice diet Thursday and a little pepto. Now, it has slowed down. Most of last week, he went 5 or 6 times a day, yesterday not at all until early this morning, then one big mess, slightly formed with a lot of muscous and 2 small piles. Should I keep him on the c/r diet or should I start introducing his food back to see if that will help him form firm stools? If he has one more night of loose stools, he goes to the vet. Please keep in mind, he is as active as ever, he drinks water, plays and still follows my every step, so he's not acting sick. Gums are nice and pink, he pees several times a day, so it's just his belly. Also, I have been feeding Nutro Ultra small breed adult for as long as I have had my first 2, about 7 years. Now, I'm wondering if this may have contributed, so I bought Taste of the Wild, and of course they won't touch it. Was this a good food to (gradually) switch to or should I have tried something else? I can take it back and exchange for another if I should. Thanks for any help. |
Have you taken him to the vet? |
No, I called them and they told me to give him pepto for a day or 2 to see if that would help. If he's not back to form by Monday, I will call and take him in. |
I would as he might have gardia or coccidia or inflammed intestines...better to be safe than sorry. |
Dont feed him nutro there are reports on the internet of itt making dogs sick and some have even died. So yes that could be your problem |
Well, I just read up on giardia and it sounds like that might be it. Especially the fact that is starts with bright green diarreha. Here I thought it was from a lot of dye in a treat I gave him, but the first 2 bouts were bright green. So, definitely a visit to the vet. What's interesting is it is supposed to be infectious, but Isabel, my other yorkie, is not affected at all. She is a ironman, thank goodness. |
Well good now maybe the vet can help your little one. I know when I lived in Tucson and would walk the dogs it was everywhere so I stopped walking my dogs and we just play in the backyard. |
Rabbit poop Hope is he gets better ! make sure the vet check him, My two had it last year from eating rabbit poop in my back yard. It's a fenced yard and I work on it at least 1 to 3 time a week , it looks beautiful , but they always get in the yard all the time. So I walk the yard trying to find all their poop, before my dogs do, What a job LOl. Bark@ulater!!!! manina,miley:aimeeyork,max:animal36 |

giardia is hard to detect as well so you may have to do a few different stool samples. I would guess more of the food switch as taste of the wild can be too rich of a diet - had you not done a food switch i would think more giardia |
No, it can't be the food switch. This started last Sunday, Aug 16. I did not buy the new food until this Saturday, Aug 22. He started the chick & rice on thur, Aug 20. If TOTW is too rich, can you recommend another? The only reason I am switching from Nutro Ultra is I'm thinking it is causing itchyness in my other dog, Isabel. She seems to be biting and scratching more lately, so I thought I'd try something different. Although one poster on here said to avoid it, I had also read somewhere on here that this food was not involved. |

There has no blood evident. This mornings had a little more form to it, although still not firm. I will try the NB, I almost bought that brand when I bought the TOTW. I am still going to keep a watch on him and restrict his diet and see what happens. If I notice any change in his behavior, I will call the vet asap. But, as I said, he eats, plays, drinks, sleeps. I see no evidence of weight loss. We'll see. |
Just an update on Mosey: he had a firm BM this morning. So, I will gradually put him back on his regular food and see what happens. I started giving him about a tablespoon of plain, organic yogurt twice a day. I don't know if it made any difference or not, but I'll continue that for a while. Hopefully, we are past this. |
