Baby licked a frog Pipek was chasing a frog and I guess he caught it because all of a sudden I saw him shaking his head and foam was coming out of his mouth. I took him inside, washed his- mouth and gave him water and a treat to get the taste out. He is acting normal but I'm worried that somehthing might happen to him later. Anyone had similar experience? |

Yes, We were in Orlando and I took the dog for a walk at night, Well I saw the frog and said to myself pls don't moved , well it did and Miley got it in her mouth, I try to get it out , she wouldn't open her mouth and eat the dam frog. I when nuts and I call the emeg. after hours vet in Florida. They said if the frog was brown or a reg frog not to worry, but if I think it was color, like red or blue , I should bring her in so they can get her something to make her throw up. All for 200.00. I call my vet hot line in IL after hours she call me back and said the same thing, unless it's a color frog she will b ok, she may throw up on her own. But to feed her more food so she would poop. She also call her a PIG lol !!!. She was fine and , I was more careful when we went out at night. Your dog will b fine , have eat more food , so it can poop. take care bark@ulater !!!!!! manina,miley:aimeeyork,max:animal36 |
I live in Houston and my baby boy did the same thing a few weeks ago. I called the Emergency Hospital and they said the frogs we had around here were not usually poisonous. They also told me that when the frog is bitten by the dog or taken into it's mouth, it emits something that causes the dog's mouth to foam. They said to get him to drink some water and watch him; if he started to vomit or have any respiratory distress to bring him in. He was fine within an hour. I'm not sure what kind of frogs you have in your area. Sounds like you did exactly what you are supposed to do. Good luck! |
Toads secrete a nasty tasting mucous through their skin and that is what causes animals who bite them to foam at the mouth. He probably will not bite another one! :) Although....I will say I have one "hunter" who once in a while "forgets" that the little toads in my yard taste bad. I have lots of toads and most of my pups have at one time or another bitten one with no ill effects. The bufo toad in Florida is one that is highly poisonous. I don't think you would find one of them in Virginia |
Thank you for all the replies. Pipek is acting normal this morning, he woke me up at 7am to go out with him as usual and he is eating and drinking so I guess he's all right. :))))))))) |

Yeah :) I wake up to work during the week at 7, I don't know how he knows its 7am because every day he jumps on me and gives me kisses at the same time. I guess he thinks its ok to do the same on the weekend hahaha |

Reminds me of the time I was in the hospital and my son was staying with my pups. He told me he was going to cover the clock so they would sleep longer! :D |
If you are in Arizona and this happens RUSH them immediately to emergency after you have taken a hose an washed out their mouth. The frog that can kill a Yorkie is brown in color. |

So glad your baby is okay. I know how scary that can be. We have toxic Bofu toads here in South Florida :(. One time my Mother's Yorkie licked one and she started foaming at the mouth and went blind and rigid. We had to rush her to the ER vet. Long story short, they said her heart was in arrhythmia and if we had gotten there 1 minute later she would not have made it. It was terrifying. Larger dogs can lick them and sometimes not even notice it, but babies like ours are so much smaller that it really is life threatening. Sounds like you little one is doing just fine though. It was smart to wash her mouth out. |
