Female incontinence I have a three year old female who leaks from time to time. She even does this while she is sleeping, so I took her to the vet. After trying with needles to retrieve urine (walks failed), they gave up and gave me the material to collect at a later time. Anyway, the vet said she wanted to rule out UTI and kidney issues but thinks she might have female incontinence (sp?). She said sometimes after spays the estrogen gets low and the muscle loses its ability to hold firm and they leak. I wonder if anyone has experienced this and if medication has helped. |

Has she been spayed recently, I know sometimes after a spaying they get a bladder infection as a result of the surgery. I would think female incontinence could also occur on a dog who has been pregnant, that can weaken muscles, but I had not read about this happening a long time after the spay. Seems like many doctors when they can't find the cause of a problem, just act like, "those things happen." I think I would definitely rule out any infection first. She just sounds so young to have incontinence, but I guess you could use belly bands. By the way, how do you collect the urine? |
When was she spayed? If you can't get it at home, they should be able to do a cystocentesis (the thing they already attempted with the needle). For Ellie, I just make her drink something an hour before we leave for the vet's and just hold her until they take it. If they are going to send the urine for culture, it is best to do it this way. |
I think she was spayed Dec of 2008 but not 100% sure. She is a rescue from a hobby breeder and I got her on Jan 31st. She had one litter and had trouble with the second and was spayed (and then send packing :rolleyes: ). I definitely should have gotten her to drink before we went. The vet tech tried walking her with a cup and that didn't work b/c she is a nervous little dog. They then tried the needle and the needle again with help from an ultrasound. So now I have a plastic syringe looking device and a container to put it in after I collect the urine. If I can figure out a way to do that....:) |
